First car buying time is very close. Any suggestions/advice appreciated

What are the Yaris' like for motorway driving? I suspect that i'll drive on motorways a bit more that your average young'un because I do like taking myself to LAN's when I can, and they all seem to be in the middle of the country, meanwhile i'm down in Sussex.
 
Looks like the general consensus so far is Yaris, Fiesta or Polo, and that Corsa's should be burned. :D

The 1l is not so great, at all, for long motorway driving. The 1.3 and 1.4D are supposed to be much better, but I can't comment personally.

If you REALLY are putting the miles in, consider something bigger, like a 1.6 Focus, but check the insurance implications first obviously. TBH I wouldn't consider attending the odd LAN as a variable in buying a car - you might be fine just putting up with hugging the inside lane and only overtaking lorries :cool:
 
No the Polo is just there because you stated you like them. It is a Fiesta, Focus or a Yaris that is the general consensus. :)

For super cheap motoring, it would have to be the Yaris. For the best all rounder, it would be a flip between the Focus and Fiesta, especially when you need that extra bit of space.
 
Would it be a stupid move to go for a Polo? Or just a move not as well advised as getting the Yaris/Fiesta?

I must admit, that out of all the cars I have looked up, the Polo does stand out as the nicest option, not necessarily the best, just the nicest. From a build quality & comfort perspective.

Again, not trying to rebel against the suggestions with my one track mind, just wondering what your opinion is on that. It would be nice if the car is a nice place to be. Y'know? :)

As I said above, I was impressed with the Yaris' all-round ability for what it is.

A Polo isn't a stupid move per se, but buying a completely poverty-spec one is, and you get less car for your money.

Also just as a side note, what is your opinion on buying a car before passing your test?

I just feel that it would be nice to learn to drive, in the car that i'm going to be driving when (fingers crossed) I pass. And I know some driving schools give you that option. Because then I will learn the handling & clutch control etc of that particular car, rather than a different one.
 
If you can buy early and get learner insurance and have a family member with 3 years experience help you out, that would be a great step up into the driving world.

Look for an insurer that will give you a competitive quote after you have passed your test, so you can swap it straight from learner insurance to driver insurance with less faffing about.
 
Right so it seem's that i'm being given a Corsa :confused:

I... Well obviously i'm over the moon cos it means I didnt have to pay for it! But... Oh... :rolleyes:
 
Free Corsa ain't too shabby. Put that money aside for a nice shiny motor in a year or two, your insurance should fall dramatically (assuming you don't do anything silly)

I'm trying to talk the generous person into getting me something else, but its hard to do so without sounding ungrateful. :p
They don't own it already, family member got a promotion and a bonus and wanted to help me out :D
 
To be fair, a free first car can't be grumbled at, whatever it is. You've got more time to save up for a nicer second car now, and can accumulate some NCB and experience :)

My parents bought me my first car - a faded red Fiat Cinquecento. It had 39 brake horsepower and cost the princely sum of £200. I loved it. Sold it for the same amount, too :D
