The Churchill Mark IIIs of Kingforce

KingforceChurchillmkIII.jpg

After the abject disaster of Dieppe the Churchill was nearly scrapped but 6 were tried again during Operation Lightfoot as part of the 2nd Battle of El Alamein, The Queens Bays led the way in their Shermans and Crusaders but were reduced to a dozen tanks by the Axis forces dug in on Kidney Ridge so Kingforce then went in with it's 6. By the end of the battle one had had to withdraw because it's gun would not recover from the recoil position and only one had been knocked out. The knocked out Churchill had suffered over 50 hits (8 were from 'friendlies') but only 3 shots had penetrated.

After North Africa the German high command rapidly adjusted it's assessment of the dangers posed by the tanks captured from the Dieppe raid (they considered it completely outdated in design and of no threat) because of the punnishment it could take and the ridiculous inclines it could traverse.

Just something about a Battleship and Battlecruiser, proper force projection of the olden days. You can see why a navy determined a super power. Park a few of these in NY harbour in 1910 and you own NY, that simple as nothing on shore could touch em!
