OMG Thief 4!

Surely if the game was 1080p you'd be reading articles about it. It wouldn't surprise me if it is 720p, not that it matters to much. Although I would've thought they could achieve more from the PS4 even from a launch title if they could do the same on current gen..

Why would you be reading articles? Just like when the few 1080p PS3/Xbox titles (or sub-720p games) get headlines for being out of the norm, then using your logic, a 1080p PS4/nextbox game isnt going to attract headlines for the same reasoning. Lets wait and see, EM must have a reasoning why its only targetting next-gen (definitely isnt coming to current gen from what Ive read), which kinda seems a gamble considering the reduced audience, unless I guess, when its a launch title most tat sells :p

1080p/30fps sounds pretty bang on my expectation from next gen - not really newsworthy if it is...

I'll wait for the first 1080p game confirmation, it'll be on every gaming site. After it becomes the norm, you won't read anything however since we know pretty much nothing about it's capabilities in regards to resolution, imo a game confirming that it'll run at 1080p will be big next gen news at first.

Either way I'm not too bothered about the whole 720/1080p, the current gen has upscaled games really well. So I'd imagine the next generation will be able to do the same.

Wasnt the next KZ that was confirmed as a launch game at the PS4 presentation also confirmed as 1080p? Wasnt that the game?

EDIT: TBF I havent seen anything big regards what you describe either though. Now you mention it, its another worry on that list why Thief 4 might be crap :(
EDIT2: Woot no competitive MP! Hope that might mean some online co-op though - http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-04-04-no-competitive-multiplayer-in-next-gen-thief

Maybe I should stop pretending to be an expert lol. Didn't know about KZ being confirmed as 1080p.

Yeah KZ is 1080P/30FPS and I can see a lot of next gen games being the same, if you had the choice of double the amount of polygons/detail etc or twice the framerate most devs are going to go for the prettier graphics, it makes it easier to sell in screenshots etc.

Thief - the dark project was such a great game. I never really got into any of the others

Thief 4 is looking great. Lets hope its a PC / PS4 only title

Ignore :p. Thats Ubisoft Montreal not Eidos - guess nextbox is still up in the air then...

Thief games are brilliant. I got Thief: the dark project straight away after playing the demo over and over in Lord Bafford's manor which came with a copy of PC Gamer.

One thing that I can see happening though, is those who had never head of the Thief games or played them back when they were released, will be drawing comparisons to Assassin's Creed, and might conclude it is inferior, which might hurt the game's release and success.

Been meaning to update this and now with E3 over it makes sense to :)

Official E3 trailer

As an archer, I really wish that bow existed and was working, be rather epic :D

Gamespots E3 interview

Ill watch more of the E3 coverage and see whats relevant, theres a few bits and pieces on GT, but prefer to just stick YT videos here...

Gonna be something that could have a lot of potential one way or another. I do hope with Dishonored out last year that this picks up the same interest...

Have avoided all Thief games since the original. I bought it at release, took it home, started playing and encountered the spiders. Promptly turned the game off, boxed it up, went to a friends house and gave him the game. Those spiders scared the hell outta me.

Haven't watched all the Thief 4 stuff yet, only a few minutes of it - any sign of spiders anywhere?

Not that Ive seen (not watched all the gemeplay stuff from E3 yet though), but I expect there be a few things to jump at knowing the series...

Hoping that means its first person, just works so much better for stealth with such a restriction, wonder if theyll steal something like B:AA detective mode for picking locks or something

Just been watching some vids and yep looks like its first person view only :D, theres some third person stuff but mostly to do with set pieces it seems.

Still not sure if it really needed a reboot, guess its the story that really matters...

Also its also heading on to PS3 and X360 too - all launching at the same time!

Another E3 video this time from IGN - same demo level, just an alternative route at the end so least it doesnt appear to be that linear, hope the areas are as big as Thief 2

I've still got T2 on disk somewhere. Apparently a win 7 compatibility mod and texture mod was released this year?! Along with a mod for system shock 2. I might have to try to play it again. I remember being mighty impressed with thief1 training level when I played it on my friends pc when it came out... I am skeptical of this though, I think it will have too modern gaming conventions like cover and one button cover to cover movement...

I have been reading this hands on review and it does seem disappointing what they are doing with the thief franchise.

One thing that really annoyed me no more rope arrows that stick into wooden surfaces only specific anchor points, which seems like more handholding.

It looks like they sold out to make a game every one will enjoy rather than making a true sequel to Thief 1,2 and 3.

I hope it turns out better than i expect will.

edited to get link to work :).

No ones going to make a identikit Thief every since LGS died, Im not expecting it to be true to those and the developers have been upfront about them 'reimaging' Thief since E3...

Off to work out those *s...

EDIT: From a quick read it looks like they have CODified and PoP/ACed Thief, because no one actually trusts a gamer nowadays to have the intelligence, tenacity or imagination to play game without assists or scripted events, we just dont seem to have the attention span...

As a long-time fan, I'd signed up to the Eidos forums a few years ago to see how it was going. The signs weren't good even then (THI4F, anyone?). The reality now is, from the perspective of a hardcore Thief fan, pretty sad;

- Garrett, the main protagonist, has a French accent.
- There are XP upgrades and weapon upgrades (upgrade your blackjack!)
- A trophy room in your hideout (in the top of a -depending on which demo you see- working clocktower; great for sleeping in...)
- A focus system for handholding which you cannot avoid being forced to use at certain storyline points
- A 3d 'flythrough' at the start of the level you are supposed to 'explore'
- No free attacking - it's Deus Ex HR-style 'takedowns' where player agency is eliminated - so 'press X to win', repeatedly.
- No jumping permitted anywhere - you can only mantle specific 'vertical corridors'
- Rope arrows return, but again, are only useful on specific 'vertical corridors', thus nerfing the exploration element which helped put Thief where it is.
- It's being released on current-gen consoles, meaning that the baseline is crippled for any next-gen innovation or development, in terms of AI scripting and level complexity.
- The developers have added contextual, on-rails events; 'press X to win, or die' moments which are the absolute antithesis of the Thief experience.

Having said all that, I wouldn't put people off buying it - especially those consolers who have never played a Thief game before, as that's who it is aimed at. Eidos Montreal made no bones about accessifying this franchise (it's triple-A, after all), but it's a crying shame that they basically took a great series of games and hard boiled them down into a state where the only similarity to the originals is in its outward appearance, and the only way to play the game is the way the developers demand that you to play it.

New trailer - looks nice, but feels very alien compared to old Thief to me. Dont like the new voice at all :(

And if anyones interested heres the Eurogamer Expo developer session
Skip to 7mins to when it starts...
