hi guys ive just bought a creative sound blaster zxr sound card and i want some good sounding headphones and im willing to pay up to £200 on them !
can you give me some recommendations please , i do game a lot so i do need a mic but im more bothered in sound quality than the mic , i will use them primarily for gaming but i do watch blu rays and dvds as well as using netflix on the pc

You know the Zxr comes with a mic?

I would recommend a good set of headphones and a clip on mic over a headset any day of the week. And your budget is good enough to get a quality set of headphones.

Depends on which sound signature you want really need to decide if good deep bass is important etc

have heard good things about the AKG K550 lately they seem like a solid buy for around £135 but then they are closed design which tend to create deeper bass with open design being more airy.

I'd be looking at the AKG k550 and the sennheiser momentum, AKG Q701, Beyer Dynamic dt770/880/990.

Heard the DT990 pro are a solid choice for gaming too.

Personally i wouldn't go near headsets apart from the beyerdynamic one but even thats just a dt770 with a mic and you can get a dt770 for £130.

Whilst the sennheiser headsets are good aren't the drivers in them really just HD555/hd 558 with a mic ? and those are worth about £60 ? or £100 at senns overpricing

I am not sure on which drivers are in them, I am happy with my pc350's, but then again I came to them from some massively worse and cheaper headset. They are certainly the best headset I have used, but I have only compared them to other headsets, as no one I know has a really good pair of headphones.

But, OP, you should listen to C64, he knows his stuff :D

Bose QuietComfort 15 on Amazon for 232, down from 300 and are considered as one of the best headphones on earth under 300 quid. Beware though get the ones sold by amazon themselfes, people say there are a cheaper option there for 227 from a second party that are counterfit.

Sennheiser Momentum get's my vote at £200 they're currently at £167 somewhere which is cheap! at £150 and below i'd get the AKG K550's (which I have done).

Then again reading a lot of reviews people prefer the AKG K550's.

A lot of talk about headphones but most of the ones mentioned would be pretty poor for the OP's primary use which is gaming. The only recommendations so far that I would agree with are the Beyerdynamic DT770/990 and the AKG Q701.

Kvnwds43, just a quick question, then we might be able to narrow down headphones for you. Do you need quiet headphones? Like are you worried about annoying anyone else in the room? Or does it matter if sound leaks or not?

no i dont need quiet headphones , i wont be disturbing anybody and im in a quiet enviroment too ! ive heard some good reviews about the pc360s , ive been looking at reviews of the dt990s and the sennheiser momentum andf they both seem outstanding headphones ......spoilt for choice lol , only one thing is then i will need a mic if i dont get a gaming headset like the pc360s , can anyone recommend a good mic too .....thanks in advance

I've just ordered the dt990 pro after a few days of research. I wanted it for watching movies. Good price at the moment for the quality you are getting. Mine cost 110.

DT990 Pro 250OHM would benefit from even a cheap headphone amp probably even something like an E5.

Those a decent mic and a headphone amp sounds like the perfect budget headphone setup.

To original poster be careful of that don't go getting any 600OHM cans or anything without getting a headphone amp, impedance can matter and your average soundcard wont drive some that great.

think i may go with the beyerdynamic DT990 premium or the sennheiser momentum unless anybody had any other good ideas

Momentum's do look very good and have many good comments, but the majority of those comments will be from people who have used them primarily for music listening. Some headphones, whilst excellent for music are not so good when used for gaming. I'd try to find out how well they perform when used for gaming, before you plump for them (assuming you do of course). The Beyer DT990 are already well regarded as excellent gaming headphones, as well as music listening. No doubt they will also be great when watching films too.

wonder how well the dt990 premium perform against the sennheisser pc360

dt990 premium are the £250 600OHM model right ? not sure it's worth getting those over the £110-£130 versions.

At looking in to headphones more I'm going to do retch my budget a bit further to the sennheiser hd650...At £299........read some rereviews and people have said they are excellent Inc a gamers review on them.... I think I've found my buy lol

Yes the HD650's are badass but can someone shed some insight on what kind of clip on mics would be good for gaming?

I honestly can't see clip on mics being anywhere near as good as the boom mics on the Sennheiser PC360's etc though?
