gaming at 2560 x 1440

Go for 7950 and overclock it. Then sell it in 6-9 months time when the new gen cards come out like volcanic islands/maxwell. Unless money is not an issue, then go 780 or better yet 4 x titans :)

To be honest, it depends what you mean maxing at 1440p. I can run all games except Crysis 3 at max settings although I have to drop the AA on some games (Metro LL for instance). Crysis 3 runs fine on high with 2xAA. I'd just get the cheapest 770 you can find. Don't blow too much cash on what is just a tweaked and rebranded 680.

Seriously guys? I think I am playing different games to most of you as I felt a second 7970 (or 7950 if you like) was needed to get decent frames at 1400p. Metro,Crysis,Shogun,Tomb Raider and even Stalker COP with the newer complete mods were all dropping too low in the minimums to consider handling 1400p and max settings

A single overclocked 670 is more than enough for 1440p. You may need to compromise on the higher levels of AA from time to time, but that's it.

As already stated for pretty much all modern games (Crysis excepted) you can run happily on many of higher end graphics cards at 1440p without resorting to xfire or SLi. In fact xfire can be a headache due to the micro-stutter it causes, which AMD hope to resolve soon. As I already said, with AMD cards, you may need to turn down or turn off AA as it impacts performance horribly.

it would probably be between these cards that you want to get; (imo)

the msi gaming edition or lightning edition are also good, if you prefer them, designs etc. but you could save your money, get the gaming and clock it to the same as lightning no worries.

it seems people can happily run high settings but "with certain games" or "toggling features on or off" so nothings perfect.
if you can wait and save a little more go for a 780 (if you prefer the green team)

hope you are happy with your choice

If it were me I would bag the cheapest ref GTX 780, this leaves all future options open. By that I mean going w/cooled adding a second if needed and having 3gb of vram.

If you want a single card would go for the best value GTX 780 or HD 7970 you can find. Some good prices can be found now even on the 780's. If your happy to run 2 cards HD 7950 is best bang for buck. Personally I'm not going dual cards again, sensitive to stutter, and to much noise / heat. Rather lower settings and have a smooth experience..

I don't have any shutter issues. My 2 770 Lightnings in SLI are quiet and purring like kittens. System fans are the loudest things and even they are quiet.

Yeah seems some people can get on with it, I've compared dual cards to single and can def tell after I have been using a dual setup that a single card is much smoother for me. Even tried 3 cards as had read that it eliminates the stutter, it did actually run really well but the noise / heat was to much. I generally prefer SLI over Xfire but it's still not perfect. Have to except to live with lowering settings on a single card in my case. Each to their own ya know. Single 780 will be ideal for me @ 1440p. When the 880 / HD 9970 launch we may not even need dual cards to max games anymore... Expecting big things from the GTX 880..

Maximum quality and 60fps all the time is a no go on a 7950@1170/1600Mhz (tha's at 7970ghz ed level of perf.) even on 1680x1050 - an no, I'm not talking about 16xAA or more. You'll need at least 2xgtx780 for that on 1400p.

PS: Maximum IQ is exactly what is says, max IQ, minus 1 or 2 settings isn't max iq anymore.
