My girlfriend has a Dell Studio 1558 and it has recently died. It produces the 2000-0146 error which indicates a failed hard drive.

Because it was a Dell, it only came with the restore DVD and no official copy of Windows. Is the best solution, therefore, to buy a new hard drive to replace the old one and buy a new copy of Windows 7? Or is there something Dell can do about it (it was bought in 2010 so its likely to be out of warranty unfortunately.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

There should be a Windows 7 license sticker with your key on the underside of your laptop.

As long as you have that you can download a Windows 7 ISO off of the net and install using the license key you have. This keeps it all legal.

Or you can just run the restore DVD which should install Windows for you.

Thanks, that was going to be my next job but I sstill think the Hard drive has had it.

Didn't know that about the sticker though, cheers.
