EA acknowledges gamer distaste for Origin "We get it." – EVP Andrew Wilson

I still keep Origin installed for the odd MP game of Mass Effect 3. It's not quite as intrusive as I feared but it still irks me that I potentially (if left running) have an additional program on my PC consuming resources just for one game.

The ONLY thing I like about Origin is that it pauses the game when you bring up the UI - I wish they'd implement that as an option in Steam for SP games. Apart from that, it's pretty pants IMO and I refuse to use it to buy more games. I'm not splitting my library between platforms any more than I have to.
 
The only reason Valve get away with Steam is that they wrap up the money making system within the cloak of a community forum feel. That's all Steam Greenlight and all the social networking addons you see within Steam are, but it's also why people tend to like Steam.

Origin/Uplay though? I don't know many people who have that running all the time the way many people seem to have Steam load/login to friends list. I also increasingly see people (including myself) having Steam signatures, taking the time to upload screenshots after a good gaming session and commenting on others etc. That's something that use to be rare, but is starting to take of. You have to comment Steam for driving it, heck you even have steam "levels" these days for the competitive types :)

Uplay/Origin just don't look or feel as nice, the GUI is hideous and I know from recent experience with Uplay where I had to download Assassins Creed 3, THREE times before it came down uncorrupted that background systems just don't seem as reliable or planned as Steam.

I'm not for a Steam monopoly despite having over 120 games on it, I use all of the systems including Origin, but Steam have gotten the balance between milking us for cash and giving us nice community elements to help disguise the cash cow system.

Where as Steam holds your hands and whispers sweet nothings into your ears as it milks you of money, origin and Uplay sneak up on you, stick a thumb up your nottobementioned and pinch your wallet before spitting on you when you run into an issue.
 
Problem with origin is ea. Origin on its own is not bad, its like an early vesion of steam. Its ea with its sim city fiasco, bf3 developed for pc comments and the new c&c generals ftp game that makes people dislike origin.
If valve would have acted like ea and released turds like sim city then steam would have had the same negative reception as origin.

I recently discovered the add a non steam game to your library function. Mother of god it makes life easier!
 
This bit is a corker.

Wilson's history with Origin actually goes back to the early days of the service.

"I had the great fortune of being on Origin back in the day; I was part of the first core team that had this kernel of an idea of what Origin could be," Wilson recalled.

"It wasn't called Origin then - the subsequent team came in and branded it and built that service. But what we really had in mind in the early days was a service that made your EA games better; a service that made it easy to access games and update games.

What a jock strap.

Back in a few days, I have a kernel of an idea about this round thing you put on things, and it rolls. It will be the best round roly thing anyone has ever seen.

They need to make their mind up what they want to do with the PC.

Their lack of support for it is telling what with limited sport game releases and the one they do have, will not be using the new engine. Seriously, that is ****.

EA give users the choice of using origin or not using origin to play your games, then lets see those stats!

You're missing the fact that EA used to use Steam until they had a disagreement about how much money Valve skims off the top. Valve wouldn't negotiate and therefore lost EA's business.

Why? You don't go to Tesco's to buy M&S ready meals do you?

Origin is fine if not great. It does what I want it to do, it's stable, and it's not intrusive on my system in terms of resources etc. I'm actually starting to prefer it to Steam in user friendliness but then again, I don't spend much time on either because I just go straight to my games.

That's what I did for ME3... Steam to launch ME3 via Origin. It worked somehow but it made the Steam Overlay a bit unstable.

Do steam allow you to use their games on Orgin?
 
My biggest concern has always been that I don't want a situation where every publisher feels the need to have their own steam like client. it means you have to remember dozens of login details, which game came from which platform, they all want their own start up entries and/or do their best to be running in the background and/or have their own DRM and eventually it just becomes too much clutter.

To keep things simple I've restricted myself to steam which has meant missing out on 1-2 games like ME3 :( but it was there first and seem to have put the most effort into making it as painless an extra step as possible for gamers.

Actually, Tiberian Sun was the first game released in the C&C franchise after Westwood Studios was taken over by EA. Apparently it was EA which decided to rush Tiberian Sun out of production and into the shops, therefore it was unfinished on release.

Well, this can be taken with a pinch of salt, maybe anti-EA fans blaming EA for the **** that was TS, but it is true that EA owned Westwood before TS came out. The first two C&Cs with their expansions were all Westwood did on their own.

Nope, but they should. It should work both ways.
 
Origin just isn't very good, however I do get good speeds when downloading the Sims 3 :).

I've not put Origin back on my new 'puta though.
