Fitting a subwoofer in a Polo 9N. Easy as pie, or a pain in the arse?

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone knows how hard it would be to fit a subwoofer in a Polo 9N? (nothing stupid, chavvy and obnoxious, just the kind of relatively small unit that might be an optional extra, to add another dimension to the music. The ol' man has a small Bose one in his Audi that resides in the side of the boot for example)

Does anyone know if these cars had a subwoofer on the optional extras list? (Meaning I assume that it would be possible to wire a sub up to the existing head unit/amp quite easily) or if the appropriate connectors for adding a sub-woofer are there regardless?

Or would it be a case or re-wiring the whole speaker system with a new amplifier and such? In which case I won't bother!

Cheers :)

Damnit Hyb's! I deliberately highlighted the fact that I don't want to decimate my car like a typical chav would, to avoid posts like that! :D

That Renault is disgusting... I feel ill...

im not sure if you've done it yet... but from the battery comp, stick your fuse there, then take a wire into the passenger footwell, quite high up near the glovebox, there is already a hole there that you can make bigger. then you have two options, down the middle of the car, or down the side. I went down the side for everything, including audio, lift up the back seats, get them under the carpet, and into the boot. I remember there being a few pix on a forum somewhere... i will post back if I find them. Where about in london are you? what head unit did you get/amp?

Saw that thread, that's not really what I mean though, he has a stupidly massive sub cabinet and a power-amp taking up half the boot, I was wondering if there was any expandability on the standard VW amp which would allow me to add a small subwoofer in the boot.

I would imagine not, no. You'd have to wire in an amp as well. You can however get subwoofers with amplifiers built in, meaning that you only have to run a power cable from the battery, then RCA and remote leads from the headunit (if the appropriate connectors are indeed present).

I thought as much. I may look into it, but will likely just leave it. :p

I would doubt the factory HU has a sub-out option (happy to be proved wrong though) so the easiest way is probably to get an amp that allows speaker level input, and just tap into the rear speakers. There are some simple, reasonable all in one units available which have a reasonable amount of subtlety, like this: http://www.blaupunkt.de/index.php?id=2062&tx_ddfproducts2_pi1[view]=1922&no_cache=1&L=1 or the older model THB-200a.

You need an active sub with high level input.

These will take the exisiting speaker inputs from eg rear channels and filter them to only provide low frequencies to an small in-built amp. Your issue is power, but running a small fused power cable from the battery to the location of the sub shouldn't be too hard if you take your time (buy a kit all you need is in there)
Active subs are normally placed under a seat.

The standard head unit does have pre outs, you need THIS cable. Have you got the gamma or beta unit? the beta unit only supports front speakers so I'm not sure it would support this lead fully but I know this works with the Gamma units and the MFD satnav. Personally I upgraded to the MFD satnav unit. That doubles the RMS output and gives far bassier sound (but it is a bit expensive). Oh and a sub wasnt an option on the polo, on the mk4 golf there was an option to have an amp and bigger speakers (Nokia DSP amp) but its really rare and rather expensive.

Unfortunately down to the car dealer being a dishonest **** (pretty standard for a car dealer I feel) my driveway is as empty as it was before... But i'm sure the advice given here will apply to whatever car I end up getting, so cheers :)

Details for the nosey ones:
:p
Went 40+ miles to look at a car, bearings in the gearbox had gone, one of the sealed light clusters had a broken seal and was clouded up (so an MOT failure then), and the last 30,000 miles of the service history were missing. In the pictures the headlights were fine, in the advert it was said that the engine was fine and that it had recently had an oil, filter & belt change etc (the oil was old and dirty, as were the filters), and he assured me on the phone that it had its full service history. Waste of my ******* time. Terrible shame cos it was a lovely car, good condition visually, lovely colour, and it looked like its first owner had gone all out on the optional extras list. I wanted to bring it home. :(

I had similar with some of the cars I looked at. Had one where it had just gone through an MOT the day before and was "mint" condition, which was odd how it passed as the engine management light remained on, the bodywork was tatty as anything, speedo didn't work and the engine was a bag of nails.

Sure everyone here has had a similar experience.

Good luck on your hunt

Got another Polo 9N now, this one has had 5 previous owners and has no optional extras, but there we go. :p

Oh and its silver.

Stereo can wait until I can afford to do it properly. The standard one isn't as bad as I had imagined. :)
