Hi there

I want to take my car control to the next level and am entertaining doing a drifting day at Oulton Park or Buxton on their drift circuit. I also see there is a drift circuit in Buxton too, so both very local to me.

First thing has anyone being on the Oulton Park and/or Buxton drift circuits? Are they safe as in nothing to hit etc?

Now I've heard drifting can cause LSD's issues to blow up etc.

So my 911 has no LSD, so any worries?

The Jaaaag, its a 3.0 S-Type (1999/2000 model), anyone know if they have an LSD?

Obviously my first time will be in the Jaaaag, to familiarise myself, obviously I can get the rear to step out in my 911 and Jaaag on the road with ease with no loss of control, but I've never tried to doing a proper big drift/slide and the road is no the place to do so. Well I want to learn to drift like a boss, so Jaaaag first, then 911. :D

Been to Oulton Park and Buxton. Did a drift day at Oulton Park in my CSL and was much fun, generally not much to hit, but a couple of the corners have some barriers/trees that test your courage.

Spectated at Buxton and it was a smaller simpler track, but crash barriers/fences all round, so more to hit, but still have to **** it up pretty bad to manage.

I have always found cars with LSD's more predicable and easier to drift, to be honest not really has much luck on cars without. Also the Jags FR layout is easiest to drift compared to Porsche RR layout.

And depending how enthusiastic you are, don't expect your tyres to last long.

These were my rears by lunch time at Oulton park in the CSL:

/jealous :( think I'm going to have to treat myself to one of these "experience days" :D

if only my Kia was RWD xD hahaha! hope to see some pics/vids :D enjoy!!!!

Yes agreed about LSD cars being far easier to drift, they are for sure. I remember my CSL was a doddle to put sideways on a roundabout and hold it quite well, wheras the 911 can bite and is far harder to hold, more un-predictable, no doubt a combination of lack of LSD and rear engine layout.

Wouldn't drift your 911. There's a reason why you don't see many rear/mid engined cars in competition :p

The only place a 911 should be sideways is in a Chris Harris video.

I wouldn't drift anything precious at Buxton. Its safer to stick to Oulton or an open airfield.

I agree. front engined rear drive is best.

an s type isnt going to be ideal but you should be able to throw the back end around without too much difficulty.

would you consider buying something cheap to learn in? mx5, ford sierra, volvo 340, bmw 325 etc? welded diff, cheap coilovers or chop springs and a large diet and they are great to start with.

Just watch out for holes between the side of the track and the grass at Oulton Park!

A few years ago a BMW flipped after dropping a wheel down a hole.
Apologies about the picture quality its from a very old camera phone.

Having said that I have done a couple of days there and only ever had a couple of safe offs onto the grass.

Last time I did Oulton in my RS4, just terrible car for the purpose, it was very very rough off the tarmac and I did 3 wheels that all needed work after the event. Kind of pointless event in an RS4 really as it's very very quick but not very sideways, which kinda defeats the points as on track it's not very quick and very understeery. It took Elliot and I about 15 minutes to work out how to turn the TC fully off too, which didn't help.

Get down Birmingham wheels this weekend, they have play pens as well as the oval. Should be pretty quiet since the BDC is on this weekend, and RDC.

LSD or locked diff is essential really, you won't have much fun drifting with an open diff. I'll be there and you're welcome to have a go in my (well set up) car if you want.

Let me know when and where Gibbo, I will bring my wifes MX5 down and you can have a go in that as it is epic for drifting as it has and LSD and full TC off.
