Get off your phone

I don't know if it's standard in all post offices but quite a few I've been in have signs to say they won't serve you if you're on the phone. If it's clearly set out like that then it doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me - if it's just a "policy" that the particular store worker has implemented then it's a bit more difficult to justify.

I do think it's a bit rude to continue a conversation with someone else while you're in the middle of a transaction. It's normally avoidable even if it just means hanging up for a few minutes and then calling back.

I've found that post offices can be weird places with weird staff, more often than not, I have a weird experience in a post office, they seem to hire divas readily.

I've had one guy have a melt down because I was taking pre-paid parcels to be sent off, he didn't want to give me postal confirmation because he wasn't making any money from it.

Another time, I've had one shout for me to calm down when I couldn't have been any more calm, just because they didn't like being questioned over talking rubbish.

Yeah I've had them try to make me pay for pre-paid returns and then have a complete mental over it when I said no its prepaid

I'm shocked and saddened at the amount of people who think it's perfectly fine to use a phone whilst paying for goods :(

I'd be willing to bet that most posters who deem it acceptable are youngsters who have been brought up in a society that's gone to the dogs.

A society where teachers have no rights and students run wild with very little discipline. I say bring back the cane and beat some respect into 'em :p

I was in a hotel restaurant a few months ago and watched the guy opposite me order his diner whilst on his mobile. He simply pointed to the menu and didn't say a word to the waiter. As has been said, ignorance and plain rudeness.

That's a bit worse though tbh... I wouldn't do either but I reckon the supermarket thing isn't as much of a big deal and though the customer was a bit rude the checkout person was a complete jobsworth to refuse to serve her - there is no requirement to make idle chit chat with someone at a checkout - they scan things, you bag them and hand over your card at the end.

The waiter on the other hand tends to want to talk to you to tell you about the specials, the wine list, ask you how you want your steak done, mention if anything isn't available that evening etc..etc.. Though again the waiter would have to be a complete jobsworth (and a bit retarded given there is a tip involved at the end) to make an issue of it.

Some people shouldn't be in the service industry if they're going to give attitude back over rather petty non-issues.

When I get a customer on the phone I just make up as many questions as possible to ask them, interrupting their phone call on purpose until they hang up, then I shut up.

:D

Manners...

Its the reason I don't work in retail and I hate working in front line jobs as they expect you to take their crap and like it. Companies these days just want custom over all other things and manners seem to be considered to be optional on both sides, its a very slow death spiral that makes me sad for nation.

Just look at bus drivers, I feel sorry for them and I at least engage them when I get on and thank them when I get off the bus. We are all human after all.

I had someone who I think was Spanish talk so loud behind me on a bus that I could hear him over my inner ear headphones that were near max volume!!!

After owning a set of Apple standard headphones I learned how bad they leaked noise so I got those headphones to show respect to my fellow bus users and then you get these ****, it really boils my blood!

Oh lawd, you sure are dramatic. To relate this as a reflection of how society is declining is beyond ridiculous.

Manners aren't a universal thing, not everyone considers the same things to be good or bad manners.

Do you moan about the state of society when you see people putting their elbows on tables because of how "rude" it is to do that?

You got to be joking right?

There are about 10 billion more important things to worry about than a customer might so happen to be taking a phone call while being served. First world problems yo.

This ^ people forget manners all to easily these days.
Agreed and they cost nothing.

"Please take your items" always gets me :D

No Ill walk away without the items I've just paid for..
Funnily enough I've done that loads of times though, paid for it and walked away only to have the cashier ask if I actually wanted it. Scatterbrain.

Personal experience has shown me that Londoners have less manners than other parts of the country TBH.... dog-eat-dog down there.

Deal with this almost every day in the Post Office/Shop I work in.

I've just had to learn to put up with it and most of the time it's acceptable if someone takes an important call (you can usually tell), they know what they want and are quick about it when at the till without holding people up.

However what does get me still and probably always will is the lar de dar women (sometimes blokes too) that are on their mobiles chatting away about meaningless **** when they come into the shop, on it all around the shop, while in the queue and then don't even acknowledge me when throwing their stuff on the counter. Only when they mumble 10 L&B without a please do I start to get a bit peeved, and the next customer will usually comment on their rudeness. Then life goes on.

There is one lady that does the above EVERY time she comes to the shop. Saying something would be an indicator that I really care, but in truth I don't, and I just feel sorry these people don't have a common politeness and pleasantness that the majority of people have and hold in high regard.

My girlfriend tries to talk on the phone when in shops/restaurants/bars and she knows I don't like it, so she takes it outside/somewhere quiet or waits until later if it isn't urgent. If she does it I usually end up apologising to the person she has offended.
