HTC One S nightmare, can anyone help me recover it?

Didn't realise there were so many HTC One S users in here - hopefully someone can give me a few pointers. I've been Samsung and Nexus 4 recently, so my last experience of HTC pain was the Desire....

Work colleague has tried to install custom ROM on his phone, but it won't boot and I've been given it with access to recovery, SD card and not much else. Some curiosities though:

1) It's H3G (Three UK) and I'm confused - think it's S3 (although that then doesn't line up with other things) - is there a way I can find this out for sure using the resources I have?
2) I tried installing TrickDroid 6.0.0 and flashing the boot.img that came with it, but still hangs at the HTC screen as did CM10.
3) I don't seem to have access to SU. Even when I flash the SuperSU zip, it goes successfully, but /bin/su isn't there for "su" to call. Should I be looking somewhere else for it? As a result of this I don't think I can S-OFF and RUU it therefore...

Any ideas? Please? :)
 
cp speed is the difference between the s3 and s4

the s4 is 1512 and the s3 is 1.7

are you trying the s3 roms or s4?

How can I check this when I only have access to bootloader and CWM?

Have tried one of each on reflection. Reluctant to just try any more until I'm more sure...
 
If you have access to the bootloader than you can tell if it's a S3 or S4 with ease.

S4 is VILLE, S3 is VILLEC2
 
Not got the phone on me this very second, but I think it said VLE.

UPDATE: After more combinations and reboots than I can comprehend, it's now alive using MoDaCo's ROM!
