Hi,

I pulled the trigger on a Gigabyte 760 today after skipping a generation and to replace my 560 GTX Ti

I've only played Borderlands 2 so far and the difference is impressive, just waiting for the Steam sales now so I can get some more games to throw at it

Here are a couple of pictures of them next to each other for anyone that might be interested

Yes its great the FPS difference in Borderlands 2 awesome and I'm finally making proper use of my 120hz monitor, its interesting too because I paid exactly the same amount for the 560 when I first bought it, for the performance that you get with the 760 for the same money it was a no brainer

I cant help but wonder if my Phenom 965 @ 3.6 will be holding it back a bit though? I intend to build a new system but no idea what processor to get and will take me a few months to complete

MSI Afterburner will show the gpu usage in games. Report back what you consistently get in a few titles. With regards to the cpu, something like a 3570K or 4670K will be fine. If you think you will need the hyperthreading then maybe consider a 3770K or 4770K. If you're on a budget, then you could maybe consider second hand 2500K / 2600K / 2700K sandybridge cpus, which iirc are pretty much the same as the newer series bar very minor differences.

You best bet would be a Intel i5 build and overclock it.

Roughly speaking the Phenom II X4 at 3.6GHz would typically deliver minimum 20fps, average 35-50fps, and max 70fps+ on the more recent demanding titles. Because of the low minimum frame rate, it wouldn't do your 120Hz monitor justice.

I got a 120Hz monitor as well, and I can tell you that although I only got a 5850, you really need a fast processor for pushing 120fps. On graphic side, you can always trade quality for performance, if people don't mind dropping graphic details to trade for higher frame rate; however when/if the limitation is with CPU, people can drop the graphic detail to rock bottom, and it still wouldn't make much difference/improvement to the frame rate.

What would justify Hyperthreading? I've noticed a few trends recently whilst reading up, I7 processors and AMD don't seem to be getting much of a mention in regards to gaming builds, any reason?

I want to make sure my next PC is better in terms of performance than the next generation of consoles as I'm paying more for the PC than I would the console so that's my main aim right now

I'm not a huge fan of overclocking unless its as easy as notching up the multiplier like I did on my Phenom, I prefer out of the box performance where possible unless it starts to get a bit too pricey and I do prefer a trade off of decent FPS and eye candy but of course its all down to money otherwise I would have bought a 780 instead of a 760 :o

If it makes any sense I'd like the motherboard and processor to match the GPU, upper mid range and relatively new to the market and ensuring it will take advantage of a 1080 - 120hz monitor (This doesn't mean it has to be 120 all the time, above 70/80 is nice)

Borderlands 2 uses a lot of CPU mine was massively better going from a 4ghz 960t to a stock 3570k especially multiplayer.

benchmarks here and looking at this you could get at least an extra 10 fps by switching to a 2500k in single player but I can tell you from personal experience it's a lot more than that in 4 player coop.

If you can afford an i7 rig I would go for it but if not i5's are still great for gaming.

Phenom 965 will be holding you back a lot and game play would be much smoother on newer processor.
