Get off your phone

Here in Belgium it's usually the other way round.
I've had a checkout woman talking to her colleague the entire time while scanning my items and taking payment, without once making eye contact, saying hello or thank you.

Yep it works both ways, several times I have been in a shop and am seemingly an inconvenience to the sales assistants' busy social schedule. At least they were serving you and taking payment rather than just standing around having a chat.

I don't think it is unreasonable for staff to chat amongst themselves during quiet period but when there are customers queuing up it gives a bad impression.

Being served a checkout is an interactive two way process. Either take part or use the self service checkout.

Say hello, watch them 'beep' stuff, you/them pack, pay, say bye, go.

It's not exactly a Design Gate Review meeting :p

Sometimes there are people who don't have the time to just chat either outside or at home. I for one am sometimes rushed off my feet and have people to speak to in different timezones across the world, narrowing down when I can have a chat to some quite small timeframes in my hectic schedule. I'm obviously in the 1% here :)

But checkout worker talking BS, quoting 'store' policy when it's just made up BS = Someone should have a word with her to alter her attitude ;)

Got this all the time when I worked in retail and never understood why they do it. If the call was so important they wouldn't be hanging around, otherwise how hard is it to put the phone down for a minute?

Even more annoying when they'd mouth stuff to you rather than just saying it, get over yourself.

I'll use my phone to text, call, or email whilst im in the queue , when i reach the cashier i'll end the call or put the phone back in my pocket.

I think almost everyone will have worked in retail at some point in their lives and it's a good grounding to learn manners and people skills.

Looking at Miss Piggy in the photo, it's no surprise that she was far too busy to get off her phone. I too would have refused to serve her and i work a long way from the retail floor now...

Sainsbury's change their mind :)
