:(

Hi,

Car (Clio 182) has been off the road for about 4 months, didn't disconnect the battery, managed to bump start it but after 30mins of driving it still wouldn't start.

Bought a new battery, but I can't disconnect the old one without the alarm going off.

I also can't lock/unlock the car on the keyfob as the battery is so flat.

I can open the car and bonnet without the alarm going off, but disconnect the negative and the alarm goes off.

How do I change the battery without annoying half the street?

Thanks!

There will most likely be a procedure that you must follow in order to prepare the alarm when disconnecting the battery - I know on my car I don't have to, but with my mum's car you have to turn the ignition on then off and then disconnect the battery within 20 seconds or something.. No doubt the procedure will be different for the Clio but have you checked the handbook? I had a quick look online but couldn't find anything.

IIRC if you lock the doors individually with the key it won't arm the alarm.

Also in the past with other cars where necessary (lost radio code etc), I've been creative when changing batteries... connect the new one up as-well as the old one before removing it, or stick the battery charger onto supply mode and connect it up to the cables or into the fag lighter.

Undo the positive, undo the battery clamp, undo the negative. lift out the battery, drop the new one in, connect the terminals. Should be well under a minute of neighbor annoying noise, probably less than half that.

I have changed a few batteries in Renaults before, if you can tolerate the alarm and just get the new one fitted, then the alarm will stop once you reconnect the new battery. Just get ear plugs and change it quickly! :D

Obviously I just want to loosen up the clamp, but I've got the various other connections to make it interesting.

I presume the whole red plastic case will lift off with the clamp and the other various bits stay as they are. In theory.

edit: All done. In loosening the terminals I managed to set the alarm off again, so just did it in one go. Everything is working again. 1 Brake caliper change to go.

Annoy the neighbours. As others have said, if you've got everything ready it will only take a minute, at most, of the alarm sounding. It will probably annoy you more than it does them.

Most Renaults do this... Its especially annoying on some mk2 lagunas which had a collar that fitted on the terminals that allowed you to screw the battery cables onto it. After taking the old battery off youd have to lever the threaded collar off the old one with a screwdriver and knock it onto the new one, whilst the alarm was going off. Sometimes it would be very tight and not come off easily. The siren was close to the battery as well. Damn French sadists!

Can you just connect jumper leads to the terminals and cables as a temporary measure?

This, I know on my Clio 16v there is a separate key and lock under the scuttle panel that turns off this alarm. Not sure if it's the same on newer Renaults.

On mine if you disconnect the battery the alarm goes off, but if you tun the ignition on and then disconnect the battery it doesn't go off, maybe give that a try, btw mine isn't a Renault, but maybe the same principle applies.
