How far did you travel to buy your car?

I'm currently looking for either a 2011 Mazda Takuya, or a 2011 Ford Mondeo Titanium (whichever is closer) with up to 25K miles on the clock, but they all seem to be about 150 miles+ from me.

Is this normal? I'm wondering if I should keep waiting for one to pop up 60 miles or less away, or if I will have to travel up to Birmingham or somewhere round there.

How far did you travel to buy your car?

Edit: Doh, I just saw I put this in Motorsport, could a mod please move it to Motors?

I read loads of threads on here and apparently diesels are to be avoided since the filter and flywheel can cause problems, and diesels are only worth it if you drive long distances every day (I don't know much about cars). The car is mainly for my wife to take the kids around during the day and for trips at weekends.

I was sticking to petrol and <30k miles, but would a diesel actually be alright? And is over 30K in 2 years acceptable use? I thought 10K per year was an average amount.

I don't know if I am being too fussy, or if I should just find one I like and drive the 3 or 4 hours up to wherever it is, or take a train journey.

I live in Hampshire and once flew to Glasgow to buy a car

I read similar comments on another forum when I Googled it. Loads of people said they drove many hours or even took flights to get their car. Some even suggested travelling up to Scotland to buy one since it's cheaper (incidentally the cheapest Mazda 6s seem to be there).

I wanted to ask round here if I was a nutter for travelling 150 miles for a Mondeo.

Edit: In case anyone was curious, my searches on Autotrader are for Mondeo Titanium/Mazda 6 Takuya, 2 Years Old, £13K max near Sutton,Surrey.

Had to travel 100 miles to collect my new car.

Bought it online through a broker, and wanted to save on delivery costs :p

Traveled from Nottingham to Colchester, Essex for my current car. The dealer was kind enough to take it off the market while I traveled down to check it out so I wasn't wasting my time.

Quite enjoyed the drive down there and even more so on the way back up when I went to collect lol

Yeah I actually wouldn't mind the drive back to much if I had the car. Hoping to actually enjoy it since I am used to a noisy 12 year old Ford Focus. I really do not enjoy driving it on the motorway for extended periods.

My last car 250 miles each way, my current car about 60 miles each way.

It doesn't matter if you know it's the right one, in fact going to remote parts of the world like scotland, cornwall, wales is good because you might (not will) get a better car for the money because other people aren't willing to travel and there is less demand locally to them.

Yeah that's true. Though there is the tricky issue of the dealer knowing you have traveled a long way and then he may be less likely to budge on price since he knows you really want the car.

I could pretend I was local but he'd see from the documents I live in Sutton :D

I got really lucky when I bought my car.
I'd been looking for a manual 335i for months and there were literally about 5 of them for sale in the whole country at any time.

I'd almost given up looking when I happened to check Autotrader at work one day and saw a new one pop up that said it was 1 mile from me!
Phoned up and got the details and it was about 10 minutes walk away, so went to have a look.
Was in great condition and a good price so I made an offer then and with a bit of haggling walked away with it a couple of days later.

Travelled from north of Newcastle Upon Tyne to Cardiff via Bristol on the train which is over 350 miles. Started at 7am in the morning and got home at midnight! :) Was the best spec, age and condition Focus ST at the time :)

Current car, 2 minute walk from work, or a 10 minute drive from home.

Longest I've travelled is easily when I picked up the 330d from NickXX at 170~ miles each way.
