Need to book a hotel tonight but want to book the night before so that I can check in before 3pm the following day, if that makes sense. Will there be any problems with this or will the hotel (Travelodge) cancel the check-in if I don't arrive on the scheduled date?

You might get cancelled but it is unlikely. Also you can normally checkin well before the checkin time, you just might not get your room yet but everything else can be done.

As D.P says you can normally check in early and leave your luggage then come back and get into your room later, or to be honest almost every hotel I've stayed at has managed to get me into my room much earlier than the advertised check in without any prior arragement

If it is like us: Depending on the agent it is booked through, all of the T&C's state non-arrival = first night paid for, rest of the stay gets cancelled.

In my hotel, we cancel (I say we, it's automatic) all reservations which haven't arrived before 4am, except pre-paid stays. These are usually checked in if it is for more than one night.

You are best to book on a pre-pay rate (otherwise if Travelodge systems are anything like the Premier Inn ones [where I used to work] they can't check you in without payment). Call them first though and check if they can do this. You would be best suited to call the night staff though as they are the ones who process the 'Non-Arrivals' etc.

A couple of friends work for Travelodge, so I can ask them tomorrow if required?

Another note:
If your room allocated is clean and ready (chances are if it is mid-week it will be, as business guests generally leave early) you should be able to check in from 12pm depending on the front desk staff :)

Edit: Didn't notice this was an old(ish) thread. Woops. :(
