How far did you travel to buy your car?

The Mini was a quick trip to the dealer in Lincoln, so 26 miles.

The Mondeo was a whole mile and a half.

Last car was about 120 miles away. I think out of maybe 10 cars in the last 10 years only 2 were less than 40 miles from me.

150 miles really isn't that far. I think living on a small island deludes some people into thinking any trip longer than an hour is half way to the moon.

But how do you tell from an advert that the car is worth travelling 100/200/300 miles for?

I travelled 3 and a half hours on the train to collect the car and then 3 hours drive back with my 39 week pregnant girlfriend when I bought my Mondeo ST220.

classic mini in oxford - way down by bus/train, then a drive home - 978 miles round trip
R53 mini in edinburgh - train there, drive back - 310 miles
vw caddy pickup in selsey - bus, train, flight, bus, then drive home (in a 1.6d 4 speed!) - 1180 miles

Not to say I wouldn't travel further for the right car.

Yeah that's true. Though there is the tricky issue of the dealer knowing you have traveled a long way and then he may be less likely to budge on price since he knows you really want the car.

I could pretend I was local but he'd see from the documents I live in Sutton

I'd phone before hand and be brazenly blunt asking about the car's faults, tell the seller how far I'd be travelling to examine the car and that if I arrived and they'd neglected to tell me anything I would walk away very quickly.

I'd like to think most folk would be sympathetic to the fact you've travelled a long way and wouldn't try to fleece you for it. I have to hope this is the case because by the looks of it I'll be heading north of the border to find a decent (see:concours) e39 at this rate.

I travelled 80 miles for my Impreza.

Travelling far for a decent car isn't bad.

My mate who lives in Inverness recently travelled to Nottingham to pickup a 350z. He did use it as an excuse to come and see me though
