Hi, l know this has been mentioned a few time's read on after being with Npower for a couple of years, after getting are winter bill and new summer Direct Debit Dual GAS/Elec payment £145 relates to £30 more than last year. After shopping round we got a fixed Direct Debit Dual GAS/Elec payment of £104 thats £13 less than are summer payment last year, so l rang Npower and asked if this was the cheapest they could do it Npower "Yes". Then l said how come l have just shopped round and my new Dual GAS/Elec payment is £13 cheaper than last years summer payment, yet you have just said this is the cheapest you can do it.

So l informed them l would be switching supplier and just hung up, the following day l checked Npower's wedsite and they could have supplied me with a cheaper Direct Debit Dual GAS/Elec payment and low and behold Npower rang back later that day and quoted the website lower payment, but it still did not match are new supplier's. Again when l asked why was l not quoted this yesterday when l queried the new summer payment or evening given it in the first place, Npower just gave a feeble excuse a bill mix up.

But what made thing's even worse we got are final Dual bill from Npower for Gas from the 01/05/2013 to 04/06/2013=£22.61 plus Elec 01/05/2013 to 27/05/2013=£62.10 amounting to Dual GAS/Elec of £84.71 and yet they quoted a summer payement for Dual Fuel £145 a difference of £60.29 and basicly are usage is the same as last year nothing has changed. I know they always add a bit on to cover themselve's but £60 and we have always payed are bills.

So it just goes to show how much they are over charging you, it pay's to shop round which l will do every year from now on.

If you have been with your supplier for over 2 year's shop round, you will be a mug not to..

All energy companies have different energy purchasing strategies & therefore have paid a different amount for the energy you will be using.

This will account for the difference in prices between the suppliers (which is why it's always worth shopping around for a cheaper deal).

To maximise savings normally I'd advise switching from fixed discount/fixed contracts whenever they are up (checking to see who is cheapest at the time of renewal).

The same method applies to phone/broadband or any other subscription service.

Now, personally I don't bother with any of the above because frankly I'm too lazy - but ... if I really wanted to save some easy cash that's what I'd do.

Regarding the different prices being quoted to you I'll leave you with this phrase which is applicable based on my experience within the energy industry (across multiple of the big 6).

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

I get the feeling these days that some big companies are treating customers as badly as possible in the hope that they go away and shop somewhere else.

It's like calling someone with a problem to hear no one on the other end of the phone and then the line going dead.

I'm with British Gas for both fuels and this lengthy winter has made my bills veeeeeeery expensive. I assume BG are the most expensive so wouldn't mind shopping around. I wish they had simpler tariffs for thickos like me to compare with ease.

Basically, can someone do it for me? Thanks.

In my last flat only the hob used gas - they estimated 60 quids worth of usage a month, turns out it was 5 quid. I switched to one of those plans where you give a meter reading every month, then they send you a bill. Pay what you use by direct debit and only manage online and you usually get the cheapest tariff.

Sorry OP but that was SO difficult to read I almost gave up. Maybe you need a proof reader? :p

Also you do realise that the Direct Debit (predicted use) and the final bill (actual use) are almost never the same? You will either be in credit or debit. Plus fuel prices have gone up since last year so it's not really a surprise.

I'm with Ovo energy, couldn't be better to be fair. They alter what I'm paying every 6 weeks or so and try not to get me into credit (I usually owe them..) but if they do get me into credit they pay me interest on any money I have with them and it's easy to get it back. Only ever been in credit once by about £9 as we came out of winter so I just left it with them.

Importantly for me their online system is quick and easy to use, not something I can say for Npower etc. I only originally went for Ovo as they were the cheapest with a fixed rate for almost 30 months.
