Fuel warning light

Played a little game of fuel light roulette a couple weeks ago in the 328. The light comes on when the needle gets down to the top of the red zone. Once below 20 miles range it goes to ---. The gauge goes all the way down to 0 then no further but keeps on going. Test mode on the OBC gives a readout to the tenth of a litre remaining. Took this all the way to 0.0 and maybe half a mile to the petrol station after that. I'd say this is pretty close to empty, it was misfiring a bit at this point, put 60.0l into it.
 
There might be some lovely crud at the bottom of the fuel tank so I try to avoid running too low.
 
The wife's 206 petrol goes forever on the red. I should know, she never fills the thing up ffs

My wife does that too and it drives me nuts. There is never any petrol in the car when I get in it. So I'll usually fill it up for a short journey and then when I go to drive it again a week later it's low again. DRIVES ME NUTS.
 
Mine is supposed to come on at 7 litres according to the book of words but it's usually when the computer thinks it's 60 miles to empty, calculated on the last 100km of driving. It's been known to go off when the fuel consumption improves then come on and scare me half to death with the high pitched beep again 5 miles later!

I've run it down to 5 miles on the trip then wimped out and filled up. Put 43 litres in so there were a couple left in there.
 
The Mini bings on at 75 miles estimated range remaining.
The Mondeo and Golf both bing when there is 50 estimated miles remaining.

I think that's a myth. Used to happen occasionally with old cars with steel tanks that were corroded. Modern cars have plastic tanks and fuel filters, plus the fuel is pumped from the bottom of the tank.
 
It's not good for the fuel pump since the fuel passes through the motor in order to cool and lubricate it.

also letting it go dry when the pump is designed for a liquid isn't the best of ideas... I imagine once air gets to the pump the engine will splutter and quickly cut out from loss of pressure. so wouldn't be running dry for long anyways.... I think xD
 
I did about 25 miles on zero yesterday. Car took 71 litres in the 70 litre tank so probably pretty close time round :-)
 
42L tank

Whenever I go fill up soon as the lights comes on the hose click at around 36L.

So, 6L left in the tank, which gives me 1 and a third gallon. At 40mpg I would get roughly 50miles in distance with it in theory.
 
Nope, the electric motor will happily spin ; even easier infact thanks to the compressible air.

I would be inclined to disagree about happily :p yea it will spin... even faster but as said the fuel is probably used to help cool it and lube it up, so I'd rather not :o
