I would absolutely love to see the SOP on force feeding.

I also had no idea who or what Mos Def was until I read that article.

Mos Def is a rapper/actor. Pretty talented and grounded guy. Not your stereotypical homeboy rapper.

Been in some good films.

I haven't watched your video cos I'm on phone but it looks like a girl who day to day has a tube up her nose? Surely that's different?

Whilst I agree there has been some dramatisation....there is a difference.

That being she is practising on herself and is not resisting. Meanwhile force fed patients are probably putting up some kind of resistance.
 
I get similar level of discomfort whenever I hear Rap music.

The video is beyond ridiculous.

The continuation of force-feeding through Ramadan is being legally challenged by four of the 106 detainees who are on hunger strike in protest at their prolonged detention without trial. A lawsuit filed with a federal court in Washington last week argues that night-time feeding could lead to long periods without water, endangering the hunger strikers.

To mark the beginning of Ramadan, the human rights group Reprieve has released to the Guardian a video in which the actor and rapper Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) submits himself to the enteral feeding imposed in Guantánamo. When the first tube was dislodged, he was unable to go ahead with a second attempt by the medical team to insert it.

The star said that he volunteered to be force-fed by two volunteer doctors to highlight what was happening to the hunger strikers in Guantánamo.

Lol, it is a difficult procedure if you resist, which they probably do, as they are on hunger strike in the first place.
I just wonder how we know figures, did the US admit them?
I thought they didn't allow visitors or humna rights people to inspect?
 
How on earth are they mounting a legal challenge against whats is being taken as illegal force feeding when their whole detnetion is illegal in the first place, and thus situated outside if the US, so there is no comeback in US courts?

This makes less and less sense.

Equaly others have been released and gone on to be suicide bombers.

Troops fighting these people could pull in hundreds of other fighters but they have to wait to be shot at first, which is a bit late by then because that means they are already pinned down.
Even when these people are picked up, along comes someone to claim they are OK and they get released again.

Just because someone is on hunger strike doesn't mean they are innocent, plenty of IRA in H-Block did the same.

I'msure it's very different if it's against your will rather than doing it yourself.

I can imqagine once it hits the "gag reflex" like that little girl says then you are likely to start to panic which maybe will bring on a panic attack.

panic attacks are scary as hell I had one when I was around 15 and thought I was dying and my face started to go numb...

Yes some people gag, swallow and you'll be fine.

I assume they are force fed as the US doesn't want the bad press of dying hunger strikers?
Anyway, they can leave the tube in place. If chmmy pulls it out, then the process starts again at the next feeding, so he can choose to resist or not.
If he does and he gags, then his fault.

Their entire detention is on rather shakey ground, so I doubt the US will care much about the manner in which they administer food,

Fozzy's video sums it up for me. Mos Def, talented as he may be, is a well known leftie in the states which generally means overly showy displays against the right (and vice versa). Typical that the grauniad picks it up and airs it.

Guess the fact is.. If you are refusing to eat via your mouth, you are certainly going to be a bit resistant when your head is strapped and a tube is being forced through your nose.

Otherwise you may aswell just eat, as your alternative sucks :-)

Unfortunately, you can't leave it in place as it is a ligature risk.

But it's hardly a difficult procedure to perform or that bad to have done. We used to do it to ourselves at parties, attach a 50ml syringe to the end and whack tequila slammers down. Do a few of those then you practice cannulation. The bloke makes out like he'd just been waterboarded - seriously man up.
