Hi

Accepted a job in leeds so just scouting the areas to live, currently I'm 60 miles away, in theory I could commute, but I have a CTR so it's going to prove expensive unless I change for a diesel.

Can anyone help me with decent areas to live?

Been warned off a few, and City Centre could be expensive due to little parking...ideally want parking as I like flexibility of having a car, ideally close to gyms and supermarket would be better

Thanks

You could live just outside Leeds. Headingley is quit nice and is about 45 minutes walk, and ten minute bus or drive into the centre.

I assume you're not a student, so I'd avoid the Hyde Park area. It's great for students, but otherwise it's just a bit unpleasant. I lived there for three good years though.

Loads of cheap flats up around the trainstation in the centre of town if you're wanting to be bang in the middle of things.

EDIT: Just properly read your post, scratch the city centre, I live around halton/crossgates. Ten minutes walk from the trainstation and a 7min train journey into the centre, if you're not too picky about the area where you're living then there are quite a few new build flats/houses to rent and buy.

Ideally want a car parking space, been looking at rents in city centre and they are circa £400 pcm without bills and parking which seems a bit excessive.

I'm going to be working in city centre, so obviously flat in CC with secure parking is ideal, don't want to be living too far out as it's nice to pop out and be next to things.

otherwise a colleague has told me to live outskirts, ie drighlington? new farnley, morley, Pudsey? what's wortley or churwell like?

Avoid east ie seacroft/gipton/ also places like armley aint nice.

I want a nice safe place where I don't have to worry if im walking back from somewhere or worry my car is gonna get stolen....lol ideally a good postcode for insurance purposes

I used to live in Morley. Big supermarket nearby and on the Leeds ring road.

Quick bus access into town.

Also depends if you want to live with the students.

Whereabouts are you working?

Really?

I would've said that was the cheap end of the scale.

You can get a house for £400-£450 that'll be in an OK area and be an OK size with a decent garden, but in the city centre £400 is basic.

Tons of choice in and around Leeds, incl the centre. I live in Halton/Tempsey area, moved to Leeds about 10yrs ago, and it's.... ok. Lived in worse places :)

As you want a parking spot your best bet is probably a house rental in the outskirts - £4-500pcm should net you something decent.

Look at Rothwell, Churwell, Morley, Farnley, Bramley. If you don't mind being further out there's Otley/Burley one way and Wakefield the other way. You can also look on train routes so Dewsbury comes into play too.

Avoid Middleton, Gipton, Seacroft, Crossgates, Harehills, Halton, Hunslet, Holbeck.

I will also add Beeston, Woodhouse and Chapeltown to the avoid list. Oh and Belle Vue and Bermontofts (sp).

I live in Lower Wortley, on the ring round and its okay. A complete mixture of young professionals, middle aged people with families and a few scummy looking chaps but not many and I have never seen or had any problems.

Morley is okay too. Good transport links into town.

Croggy and Halton aren't that bad, No matter where you go there's going to be rough areas but you can pick up plenty a cheap property in these areas, full of first time buyers at the minute aswell.

Colton is the one to look out for, give it ten years and that will be the next halton moor.

If you are commuting into the city centre during rush hour the traffic is horrendous. Personally I would live in the centre and if I really needed my car there just pay a bit extra for a parking bay. There was nothing worse than sat in traffic for over an hour some mornings and the buses aren't better as they are stuck in the traffic with you.

Moortown/Chapel Allerton/Roundhay is a nice place to live.

Headingley isn't too bad, but populated by students and rents are not bad either. It's just it's been a bit of a rob fest at the moment, in areas near by such as Woodhouse/Hyde park.

I'd avoid Gipton/Crossgates/Armley/Hunslet/Holbeck.

If you can, why not try outskirts of Bradford such as Pudsey, Stanningley?

Headingley isn't really that close to Woodhouse or Hyde Park. I have to say, I never had any issues at all living in Hyde Park.

I live in Headingley and I really like it, though I went for a more 'grown-up' / quieter street. As mentioned, 400 quid isn't that much - it won't get you much in the centre.

when I was looking for a place in the city centre a few months ago, the cheapest i could find was 1 bed for £450 (no parking included) and they were tiny. The cupboard in the living area open out and voila, there's the kitchen

I would recommend far end of Headingley (out of reach of most students), Chapel Allerton, Moortown, Alwoodley and Morley (heard its okay).

Of course, if you can stretch to it Adel, Moortown, Alwoodley, Shadwell have some great areas :)

I'm not sure if you have a great concept of money to be honest. I dont know how you can find £400 pcm for a flat (albeit basic) in the city centre expensive yet seriosuly consider commuting 120 miles every working day as being viable? Even in the best case of owning a Diesel how much will that be per month just on fuel? £300 to £350 at a guess?

If you're commuting into town, pick somewhere near a train station - either walkable, or if you're going to drive, one with a decent size car park. I live in Scholes, and drive to Garforth some days, if you pick a Transpennine train, you're in Leeds in under 10 mins. Wouldn't drive in via York Road for all the tea in China.
