Well yeh, any punitive action is going to backfire, particulary if the people are innocent. However keeping a bunch of people locked up is very expensive and really bad PR, so I'd imagine the Americans wouldn't go to these lengths unless they hoped the payback was worth it.
I guess they are hoping to be out of there by the time these people are released anyway, then they are someone else's problem.

It's an easy moral choice for Americans anyway, if the ultimate safety of your country is a concern and a few Muslim peasants stand in the way of that, then it's a no brainer to torture them in order to dismantle their various groups.

Given that they have already pee'd thirteen trillion up the wall just on pacifying these peasants, then only the people who are already well off and can choose to make a career out of being holier than thou actually care any more.

i watched this tuesday, one line that sticks out is something like

so... the 2 minutes before he says that, hes not bothered? hes acting? hes being someone else?

(not saying it would be nice to be force fed something, but if i thought i was going to die every time i was force fed, id bloody eat something. They are making it happen everyday refusing to eat!)

And do you expect the girl in the video as a child and for that matter all children are compliant during this procedure, that occurs on every paediatric ward across the country day in day out. And an awful lot of adult ones too.

Saw a programme on TV later that night showing how easy/painless it is having a tube put up the nose. It's not as bad as he made out to be that's for sure.

This is such a load of bull. He thinks he's some representative of the people, comes across as a right self-important prat at the start. He's also milking it something shocking to try and get his agenda across. I've had it done before and it's nowhere near as painful or uncomfortable as he makes it out to be, it's just a really strange sensation. There are videos on YouTube of 12 year old girls doing it to themselves and they aren't squirming and crying like babies. The people in Gauntanimo are also prisoners afterall, and by refusing to eat they force this upon themselves.

I think the human rights issue is beside the point and the fact is that Mos Def is a bit of a self righteous jessie. That link with him and Hitchens is pretty funny with him basically saying "I don't care for what you have to say, for you hitchens, know nothing. I also care not for what anyone has to say, for I think I know everything."
