Activists Climbing The Shard

This current government's sustainability agenda stinks. I can see why Greenpeace activists have decided to act, but I can't help feeling that when they do often riles up so much negativity towards those of us who actually work in sustainability. I know the general public couldn't give a **** about the environment or social concerns like exploitation, but at least when you work away in the background you can do it without bother. Greenpeace don't seem to realise that the only people who get vocal about their actions are the knuckle-draggers in this country, not the government, the current one of which doesn't actually give a damn anyway and is only trying to make an economical quick fix.

Lots of foreign sounding names on that news article, I wonder if they partook in a trip to get to London on a petroleum based fuel powered flying vehicle, and do so multiple times a year to go "protest" various different places, ****ing hypocritical *****.

I disagree, there are plenty who do care.
But green peace do far more damage to their supposed cause.
Look at people like HFW with the fish fight and other causes, that have shaped several supermarket policies.
Look at philanthropists who are pumping hundreads of millions into green tech etc.
There are far better ways to show support, unfortunately green peace is the only "green" political party and I bet the put off the vast majority of us that do care.

The thing I pick up from this is how out of touch the media/police really are. Comments like "...are doing is extremely dangerous..." make me grimace. They are climbing, with plenty of equipment, a very simple structure to climb... If it was extremely dangerous HSE would have a field day with the windowcleaner they passed using the same equipment...

Grow up, stop moddycoddling us and learn that climbing is a fun pastime, not all of us want to sit in our rooms all day being boring!

As for the actual reason, well...

Nice attitude. Oil and gas drilling in the Article is a terrible idea so if this gets the subject debated then I'm all for it.

I'm not Greenpeace's biggest fan but sometimes the direct action approach serves a purpose.

It's not a terrible idea, just need to make sure it's well regulated and the risks mitigated. I.e. don't allow the US/Russian/Chinese companies anywhere near it!

EDIT: Not saying it's necessarily the best idea but it isn't a terrible idea if done properly. At least in the arctic there won't be much sabotage, which is the major issue in many parts of the world. It's also significantly better than the idea to strip nine black smokers.

It's an awful idea.

Such places should remain unviolated by the greedy $ chasers.

Lets hope the non UK protesters are not allowed back into the country again after the massive waste of police time and resources they have caused.

To be fair to them though, they can't say anything otherwise.

They have to condemn it firstly because of copycats and other impressionable people who may go try and climb The Shard or a similar building who don't have the equipment or experience.

Then there is the fact that they don't know who is climbing. Sure they might be amazing climbers, but they aren't sanctioned to be on the building. I would imagine the window cleaners/maintenance guys also know where they can and can't setup ropes because they were briefed by the construction company.

They aren't going to look much good if they just say... Oh well, they are great climbers so its all fine.

The biggest thing to come out of this will be a review of security at The Shard to prevent anyone from doing it again.

Or they could just say nothing...
Blame the police. There was no need for them to waste any resourses.

Hear hear.

Just shoot them, a horrible organisation and does more damage than good. Also a bunch of lying morons.

And I'm all for purist of sustainability and green. But they lie, scaremongering and have no clue. Can't build nuclear, can't have windfarms either, so how do you purpose making power, wait you don't have any ideas. What a surprise.

The Greenpeace representative on the BBC news said, "health and safety is of paramount importance" when commenting on the people climbing the Shard.

I thought their main concern was saving the planet.

It's health and safety gone mad!
