having their chips in the Xbox One AND PS4 means a guaranteed income stream for years to come and it's chips that have already been researched and developed. R&D costs have probably already been recouped and you know they're going to sell 10 million consoles at least by year end 2014.
Not just haswell, the new atom, looks like it will absolutely trounce even top end arm chips, it's cheap and very power efficient as well.
I can't see amd doing well in the coming years, there niche market, I tel seems to off got their hands on and even surpassed amd.
They have the consoles and that's about it, unless they release something unheard of.

I also think think that since Sandybridge, there seems to have been less of a fad with Ivybridge and Haswell. Could it be that Intel are releasing processors too soon for the desktop market? Would be curious to see what the comparative sales figures are like for all three families. If the sales figures for the latter two are slower then perhaps this trend could be telling investors to put their money in AMD instead because sale forcastes in Intel aren't being met?
It's not to fast, it's just people aren't realy interested in haswell chips for desktops.
Haswell was built for energy effeciency. Where most desktop users(well more people on forums like this which want over locking beasts) aren't to concerned about that.
However desktop sales are continuing to fall and mobile computing continues rapid growth.
Even several of the industry analysts (before someone brings this up) have said its not Win8 it's just the market that has changed.
Expect desktop sales to continue decreasing for years to come, before stabilising at a much lower figure.
If haswell and atoms are as good as all the info are pointing towards for mobile computing, expect the intel lead to expand even further over amd.
The predictions are that tablets will out ship desktops sometime in 2015, which shows why MS, intel and other companies are scrambling to switch.
Hopefully the extreme capability of win8 tablets, will make apple and to a lesser degree android pick up their games.

Unless Intel come up with something to fight against Qualcomm and ARM in 10 years or so they could be in AMD's position now. Desktop sales are continuing to tank and will keep going. Whole companies are moving away from large desktops to either SFF PC's or even moving towards Thin Client situations. Our work has just replaced ALL of their Intel E8400 based Desktops (circa 5k machines) and replaced them with Wyse terminals like this which, and I will admit to being surprised by this, is powered by an AMD chip.

They have if the leaks are correct.
Company desktops do not need a lot of computing power, they do need to be cheap and energy efficient though. It's a lot of power to run several thousand pcs then the extra air con in the offices.
And intel saying tablets will be around $300 that's over the initial design concept of $200 but still very respectable in the tablet market.
Although I wouldn't read to much into the clock score ATM, it might just be showing a false speed.

The servers powering these thin clients are almost certainly going to be intel based although that doesn't make up for the loss in revenue.
I can't remember any reorgs as significant as this one. The only one that comes close was when the US gov was threatening to split Microsoft up.

I worked as a 3rd line tech and replaced all our desktops with NCD Thinclient terminals in 2000!!!
It won't take intel 10 years to catch up....how about now?
The Z2760 already trounces Tegra3 and S400. Silvermont will trounce S800.

I don't think Arm are worried about the new Atom to be honest. Arm chips are everywhere.
The extreme capability? You either have compromised products like the Surface Pro (fans, eurgh) or suffer RT. Microsoft's tablet strategy is wonky and confusing for consumers (why does a non-X86 version even have a desktop?)
You obviously haven't seen this or next gen atoms.
This gen atoms are good, poor integrated gfx, but good, 9.5hrs battery life, so basically identical products to arm tablets. Baytrial is significantly fast than today's atoms, at a cheaper price point and despite being much faster also use less power.
Baytrail atom, absolutely demolishes arm even the Qualcomm 800 the fastest arm can offer, doesn't come close to the atom and also runs android.
Haswell should improve battery lie on the pros a massive amount as well.
So yes arm should be worried. Apple, can't even multitask. Where win8 tablets can its upto 4apps in metro on win8.1 depending on screen resolution, and what ever you want on the desktop.
In the fall when the new atom is released, ARM will have competition, so far they haven't had any, expect to see some android tablets switching to intel as well

AMD had a pretty solid design team back in the Athlon 64 era, some guys from the legendary DEC Alpha team along with some people from NexGen (originally acquired after the K5 flopped - history repeating itself?)
Agreed. It won't be long until iOS and Android are yet another mobile OS consigned to history. They just aren't iterating as fast as they need to be to keep up with some of the stuff that Microsoft is now bringing to market.
It's incredibly frustrating, for example, not being able to have TV Catchup running in a small box whilst still being able to use the tablet for other things. Who in this day and age JUST wants to watch TV and do nothing else at the same time?
By whom? Microsoft are one of the most innovative tech companies at the moment. Windows Azure is forecast to eclipse the entire Windows business unit in revenue by 2017. Xbox One looks amazing. Nobody else has Kinect.
ARM being a threat to Intel doesn't really bother Microsoft in the slightest. The "Wintel" partnership ended a few years ago when Microsoft starting writing a Windows kernel for ARM. Microsoft will simply target whatever platform they see fit. Whilst Windows RT has had a rocky ride, it's only been due to a lack of apps but this is improving all the time. The W8 app store now is actually looking rather healthy.
