Is 6950 to 2x GTX 580s a good upgrade?

Hi guys, just wondered if you could give me a quik bit of advice...as in the title, I'm thinking of upgrading from a 6950 2gb to 2x GTX 580s 1.5gb, do you think this is a good upgrade?

I know the 580s are better, but is it worth going for a more powerful card instead?

Here are my current specs:

  • Asus P8Z77-V LX Socket 1155 VGA DVI HDMI 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
  • Intel Core i5 3570K OC to 4.4GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor
  • Corsair Vengeance LP Performance Memory modules 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2133MHz CL9 Blue
  • MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
  • Corsair 750W PSU
  • Windows 7 64bit

Thanks for your time

Whats the situation with cost? how much would the upgrade set you back?

^Depends on that tbh, if they're dirt cheap, go for it, if its going to start running into 760/7950 territory you may be better off considering one of those.

The 580s use a ton of power. Overclock them and your system too and you might run into problems. The memory's limited too.

Since a 7870 LE outperforms a 580 easily, it all comes down to whether they're really cheap or not, as above.

A 750w power supply MIGHT be pushing it a bit for two of them. Especially if you overclock them. That would be a pretty power hungry set up!

Why not get two 660ti's instead or something. Can be had for good prices at the mo.

£200 is about the maximum I was thinking would be sensible.

I'd rather go for a 7950 and overclock it. It'll perform really well and use a fraction of the power, and is far more future proof.

I wouldn't bother with that motherboard...

It doesn't officially support SLI, and the 2nd PCI-E x16 is only x4 lanes...

Just upgrade to a 7950 or somthing instead, or just go for a single GTX580 1.5MB for £100 and be done with it if you can.

If that board doesn't officially support SLI as Marine says then I'd avoid that option as its likely to be a pain driver wise.

It's £200 for both, though one has a dodgy fan which needs replacing...

Just get a single GTX 760 or 7950? Brand new, no dodgy fans, much less power, less heat and noise. Sure it wont be quite as powerful as 2x580's but i know what i would rather have...

@OP,

A definite NO!

Zero vram limitations with a clocked up 7950@~1150/1500(most will hit those clocks and more) with 8 games is what you want to do.

Zero dual card attention needed, 3Gb/384-Bit bus/superior compute performance all for good future proofing, very good driver support, with low power consumption in comparison to twin 580's.

Iv'e used 7 79's in total and this is the best all rounder:

If it's out of your budget, sell some games and bring the price down, I imagine all of the games should get you at least £50 back.:)

Another vote for a single 7950, sell off the games and you're under the £200 mark for a nice brand new card with no fan issues and full warranty, plus the potential Vram limitation of 1.5Gb is no longer an issue. Less power, less heat and no potential PSU blowing :)
