Yep flight or fight so if someone starts to smash your face into the ground I'd say that would hold pretty good reason to shoot the aggressor.
You're allowed to watch people in a public place. Being watched isn't grounds to attack someone.
You also keep stating that Zimmerman chased Martin, there is nothing to suggest that is the case.
I had only a passing interest in this case so hadn't really taken much notice of the trial, however, the snippets I had gleaned from the media reports they made it sound like Zimmerman was banged to rights.

It will be interesting to see what lawsuits crop up against the media from Zimmerman, I believe there is already a case against NBC who edited his 911 call.

What I don't understand is, why does it have to be a "white" (Hispanic really) man vs a black man, rather than man vs man. Why does race, religion, hair/eye colour have to come into everything.

How many people actually are aware that Trayvon had weed a screwdriver and obvious stolen items at high school? When i was at high school i never ran about with a screwdriver in my back pack.A lot of people are making him out to be some kind of angel but he obviously was far from being one.It is a gated community its not somewhere you loiter when you are a young black man.He could have ran from the scene but chose to loiter around.
