BIG PRIZES! Well not really but you can win a signed, first edition copy of my debut novel...

It was called Songs of Love and Loss when released on the Kindle. However the name was changed whn it was published in paperback and then the Kindle version was updated. Alas, Kindle books don't auto update so you'd have the old cover (and old reading order list, obviously!) :)

Ah, brill. I was worried that I'd missed something there. Cheers. :)

Give yourself a pat on the back for spotting that. It has been missed by over a dozen people who had preview copies, and one of them is an English teacher!

You need a very thick skin exposing your work to the public domain![/SIZE]

I spotted it on the first read. *Grins smugly*

You're last point is correct! You have to learn to laugh off those single star reviews. Although, the two I've had on my work are both fake reviews by (I assume) competing authors which is sad in the extreme.

Are you really J K Rowling and your book has only sold 500 copies in the last 6 Months because you wanted to see how well you could do without being known as J K Rowling, but then you found out it wasn't doing very well at all so you let the secret out and now the 'secret' book has become a huge success, so you can now pat yourself on the back, or something? ;)

This happened?

I had an obvious error spotted moments before it went off to Amazon (in paperback) and that error wasn't spotted by anybody tasked with proof reading. So yeah, not easy. Also I can spot errors in other books, I'm a big reader, but obvious ones seemingly sail past me when reading any first drafts of my own work. :(

Well I'm 20,000 words into the next book in the series. Proof that when it's finished and I'll give you a free copy!

Proofread your own work as much as you want - there will always be a lot of mistakes that you miss. This is just the way of things, sadly. I'll be paying proper editors to go through my next piece.

Really would be great to win a copy but it says it is currently hidden on goodreads :(

Something's gone wobbly at their end. Trying to sort it out.

You're last point is correct!

I made it to number 9 in the top one hundred science fiction books with my previous novella and number 252 overall on Amazon. So I know that some people don't find my work that bad.

However I've had criticism. Thankfully my story telling is good enough and people enjoy it, that's why I'm self depreciating about the quality of my Engrish.

Yeah, I think my next book will get the professional treatment. However I've seen enough errors in work from people considered 'proper' authors that I'm not too embarrassed (although the back page thing turned my face a little red)

Your.

Good stuff OP, writing a book looks like a huge undertaking.

Not a book that would interest me so I'm not going to enter and take the opportunity away from someone whom would enjoy it. However I would like to say congratulations ;)

Cheers!

Started with a short story on the Mindle a few years ago, then a novella, followed by my first novel (the one in the OP) in eBook format.

Now I'm in paperback, on the Kindle and in the Apple iBookstore. Got another novel underway. It's a huge undertaking, and one I am getting better at, but it's fun!

However I would like to say congratulations ;)

Thanks for the kind words.

If Iain M Banks is was God ( :( ) then how do you fare in the whole space opera arena, LordSplodge?

I'm the Sci-FI writer equivalent of Jar Jar Binks. :D Or Dan Brown...

Incidentally, how much does it actually cost per paperback (if you don't mind me asking)? I assume it's a self-published "print on demand"/per order kind of thing?

how many copies does one need to sell to make a living out of it (i.e. 50k a year or something along those lines).

It depends on the price of your product and the royalty percentage that you receive, of course. The rough answer would be a few thousand books a month. Ninety-nine percent of writers don't earn that, sadly.
