Does seeing cruelty online affect you?

Are you saying that you will rule out visiting any country if there have been reports of cruelty therein? If so, good luck visiting anywhere.

if their has been recent human torture or killings in an area thats recent or frequent then i wont visit the area..

no go areas for me are the middle east, the whole of Africa, Brazil, ireland, poland, russia, mexico, costa rica and loads more.

I used to think I was a hard man who is rarely affected by this stuff but after seeing some of the videos from the cartels... made me real queasy.

OP whatever you do don't google "Arsen Savadov - Book of the Dead".

— How did you manage to get permission to shoot in the morgue?

— I found a very important person, who could push the right buttons to make this happen, explained what I want to do and that this is a type of renaissance tradition. And that man got me permission to shoot. Although for me the project wasn’t ‘on’ until the Book of the Dead came to be a performance, and this happened only when I decided to show it at ART MOSCOW in a context of things that were actually used during the filming process: carpets, tables, TV, other stuff. I wanted the viewer to sit in that chair which in the morgue was occupied by the grandpa and his grandson. And when he or she sat down in that chair and started flipping through the photographs, the realization of what this object actually is made the person jump out of the chair fasted than lightning. Now this is what I call ‘interactive’! And then I was asked to remove these works, the section was closed off and a guard (and old grandma) was put at the entrance with a sign saying ‘No entry for those under 16’. Naturally, this made the whole thing even more intriguing. No one expected something like this from me, no one thought I would go beyond photography. This was clarity of vision through fear, this was pure performance.

Go work out the murder rate per km2 of the UK and compare it to that of a country that you're too scared to visit. I imagine that you'll be surprised.

My point is, it's ridiculous to write off a country because of a perceived high murder rate. Murders happen every day, in every city of the UK. It's just a fact that the majority go unreported (or underreported, if you prefer).

Where do you live anyway?

Yes it affects me. I'm quite good at staying away from that sort of thing, but occasionally I'll see something that makes me lose all hope in humanity. I physically feel ill and it'll play on my mind for days/weeks.

I've actually seen an attempted murder involving a machete and hammer in front of my house quite a few years ago. Never seen anything remotely like it before in my area. Still to this day I can remember the sight and sound of the blood spraying out of his leg; the ordeal of watching a guy die while waiting for an ambulance (took over 20 minutes) was traumatic.

I've seen a few videos on the net that I'd rather not have watched, the dog on fire video still haunts me. I'd love to find the ******* who did that and burn them alive slowly.

Apart from that the internet hasn't affected me at all.

LOL Mickie, you may as well just sit in your house all your life then. You've probably got just as much chance being murdered in the streets of London at night in the wrong area as you have in many other countries.

I don't really want to desensitise myself to human suffering, I like the fact it causes an adverse reaction.

I have stupidly watched a few things online that haunt me from time to time. The 2 biggest ones are of humans though.

The first one, I watched the beheading video of that British citizen many years ago. I can't remember his name, but it was HUGE news at the time. Wish I had never watched that video.

Second one, is religious extremists just being rounded up in South Africa, laid on the floor and just shot in the street. People going about their day, as 10 or so people are just put on the floor, face down, or face up, regardless. Shot... No questions asked.

The subtitles as well... "Don't shoot him in the body, I want his jacket". As the man on the floor is trying to cover his head... Not nice.

Other than that, I do get very upset when it comes to animal cruelty but it happens and I think people work them self's up too much over it as people are just as, if not more cruel to other humans which I think should be on the top of the agenda.

Oh, I'm an animal lover and yes, if I were to meet someone from those dog fighting videos, or cat kicking videos then yes, I would probably give em a piece of my mind.

I try not to look at them if I can. I don't have that morbid sense of fascination with disaster or people going through hell.

However does it affect you? Yes, I think people become desensitised by it, and either build up resilience to it and are no longer shocked by it. Meaning that people will become less inclined to do something about something which no longer seems like a "big deal".

There are 6 things of note which have necessarily affected me since I've been 'online' independently from the age of about 12;

- some site called 'ogrish' or similar years and years ago, there was a beheading video going relatively viral and I watched it. Disgusting and never again will I delve into that part of the internet again. Would have been 15 or so at the time (10 years ago!)

- seeing a picture recently of a dog having tried to take a bite out of a porcupine, the result is an eye sore

- The chap who jumps off of a cliff and quite literally splits his face in two down the middle having faceplanted a decking, you can see him concious in such condition in the hospital afterwards

- Many many years ago also, something called 'BME video competition', people basically mutilating their genitals for 10 minutes or so

- Watching a woman in what I believe was a middle eastern country being stoned to death in the middle of a huge group of males all throwing large objects (obviously including rocks/stones) at her

- The skinning of animals (dogs namely), I believe the video originates from China

By seeing cruelty, I mean in the form of images, animated GIFs and videos of people being cruel and violent, people being cruel to animals, animals attacking other animals, racial violence etc etc.

We're all internet savvy and I'm sure you all understand how easy it is to come across images of violence. Whether that be through through social media channels, message boards or browsing for giggles or out of interest.

For me, animal cruelty is a big one. Over the years I've seen so many images and videos on message boards, facebook etc of animals being brutally killed or harmed and it causes me some concealed issues inside. For example, recently I seen a woman setting a dog on fire. Previously I've seen such acts as dogs being skinned alive, a mouse/rat being blended alive(some might laugh, I don't) and a dog being thrown from a tower block.

I'm not soft by any means, generally said to have very little visible emotions, I don't get upset or get angry but this affects me in a way I can't explain, these images ingrained in my head seem to.. haunt me, for lack of a better way to put it. A sick feeling to my stomach whenever I'm reminded or happen to accidentally stumble across something similar.

Can anyone relate to this?

I can relate. I remember watching a video of some guy shooting himself in a court hearing, and I can still picture it vividly over a year on. The animal cruelty does sicken me, but thankfully I haven't had to watch anything as horrific as what you described.

i remember this. it looks convincing but i don't see how it can be. there would be no videoing in theatre like that.
