Hi, I’m looking for some advice from the technically more adept than I...

I am looking to buy a laptop over the next few weeks that will be my workhorse as well as being man enough to run some 3dsMax, PS and games.
I have a budget of around £1000 - £1300, my current machine has a 18.6” 1080 screen so I would like something in 17.3” HD, other than that, as long as it will run some 3d software and maintain fairly decent frames in games like Arma3 and BF4, have a large HDD with possibly a smaller SSD for speed I’m lost on what to buy.

My short list after some research would be:
Asus G750JX
Acer aspire v3 (only has a GTX 730M)
MSI GT70
OcUK Hardcore Gamer P170SM

However, they all seem to come with slight variances in GPU’s and i7 CPU’s and before this week I thought a GTX730M would better than a GTX680M as it was a bigger number! (I now know otherwise).

So if any of you could either recommend a laptop or maybe a spec that would suit my needs I’d be happy to hear your thoughts.

Things that matter:
17.3” or larger in HD
Good frames/s in newer games (maybe not on highest settings)
Good size HDD and smaller SSD
Well made (Do lots of work abroad)
Reliable
Cooling (current 4yr old laptop cpu hits 92 degs C)

Things that don’t matter to me:
Weight
Battery Life
Looks (although I hate the ‘fancy’ lights on some gaming laptops)

Thanks,
JimmyP

You might want to add 16GB of Ram and a 250GB SSD which takes it slightly over budget to £1331, if you get it on this week only offer, also assuming you already have the OS :)

Thanks for the info OC, this system looks good and I've just checked the AMD GPU out and it appears to be faster than the GTX680 (marginally), the only thing that I'm not sure on on that model is the 'art'.
I may well be able to stretch the budget a little further and include some of my own cash into the deal to get the SSD and further 12 goats.

I don't have an OS and the company licence wont be ready for a few months so will have to acquire a legit licence as well as office. I guess W8 is the way to go for this system but I've not heard many great things about it. I'm sure W7 would be cheaper and I can always upgrade.

I'll be looking for some prices on the MSI and Acer to compare them to this P177SM.

Also found this today: ******** Elite N1724 - 17" Intel Core i7 4700 - 16GB DDR3 Memory - 1TB SATA Hard Drive - 128GB MSATA Drive - NVIDIA GTX 770M Graphics- for under £1500 with W8 and Office.

Thanks for your help.

OcUK Hardcore Gamer P170SM

i7-4700QM
8GB RAM
780M
120GB SSD
500GB 7200RPM HDD
Intel 6300

= £1360. That is the best performance laptop you will get without going SLI.

Now if you need windows, I guess you're going to have to sacrifice the 780M for the 770M, this is something I just wouldn't do and live with the 30day constant popup and use Google docs until I find the money for a Windows Licence. Also, as for getting a copy of windows for the next couple of months, just google windows 7 iso, you can get yourself a legal copy easily.

As for Windows 8, people seem to constantly bad talk it, but it performs faster than Windows 7 in every aspect and when you install a start button replacement is effectively windows 7, just better.

MacBook Air / MacBook Pro

Macs are awesome ad all but did you even take the time to look at the OT, he wants a gaming machine and lets be honest a gt650m is not going to cut it. let allowed a 5000hd.

MSI GT70 looks like a good laptop, comes with windows 8 (I'm sure you will need it sooner or later) 770GTX and decent all round specs. IIRC these machines are very upgradeble so you could upgrade the GPU in a few years if it slows down.
