Palit GTX 580 1.5GB issues

Absolute mystery.

Current theory - some little **** had a 470, had some problems with it, flashed as a 465 as a kind of downgrade to make it more stable (correct me if this is an unlikely solution).

After said flashing, the card probably still crashed a lot, so said person bought a 580 instead, noticed how damn similar the cards looked, and somehow with masterful skill applied an amazingly convincing sticker to the PCB (check out the photo, it had me fooled) whilst simultaneously terribly applying the 580 sticker on the front (it has peeled quite badly) with a scratched out 470 lettering underneath (almost certainly scratched out with a compass).

Said toe-rag has then obviously sold the card on as a 580 in a 580 box etc. etc. and it's passed through a number of hands to me, who was stupid enough to buy a 465 which for "some reason" had the wrong label on ("but its fine, honest")

Plausible explanation?

This is possibly the oddest mystery going. I demand moar!

You could either send it back or take the risk and either get a better card, or no card.
Personally, I'd flash it. Worth the risk tbh.

I'm stumped. I want to know moar too :(

I just tried running GTA4 and it lasted no more than a minute or two (during which there were many screen artifacts and the framerate was very bad).

Something tells me that flashing a 470 BIOS on this thing, even if it's the correct BIOS, is not gonna help. It must just be screwed which is why someone flashed a 465 BIOS on it

I've taken the thing out and put my 660 back in (this card is for a living-room PC I'm building but haven't finished yet so I don't have anywhere else to test it).

Unless people really think it's worth bothering to put back in and flash (via windows), I'm going to think about getting my money back.

At this point I'm actually considering whether to get Paypal involved because this is not just an incorrectly flashed card, this is deliberate fraud as a card has been passed off first as a 580 then a 465 despite being [almost certainly] a 470. I don't think the guy who sold it to me knows anything because he was happy for me to try flashing a 580 BIOS, but I'm not sure this card should be able to go back on the market...

When the GTX465 first came out they simply used surplus GTX470 cards and flashed a cut down bios onto them which disableled some of the shaders and some of the memory

Indeed, I knew about that although I was under the impression that it had very mixed results.

So are you saying this to support my theory of why someone would flash a 470 down to 465?

No im saying it would have come as new as it is now. It has a 470 sticker underneath because they were altered by nvidia when they first came out.

But if it dosent work as it is now then send it back, but first try the older driver i mentioned above as the 320.xx drivers arent very good and cause the driver not responding problem

The penny seems to have finally dropped.....

Why you'd want to try flashing the card and potentially bork it is totally beyond me?

It's not as advertised so just ask for your money back, simples.

He brought a 465 and got a 465, albeit one that dosent work.

Ive already said why it would have GTX470 stickers on it. I thought this was widely known.

As for the box i wouldnt worry about that as i got a couple of 7600GT cards when they first came out and the box they came in had 6600GT plastered all over it.

EDIT : The GTX580 part number sticker on it tho is very very strange

Yes, the PCB sticker shows no sign of tampering.

But you really haven't explained why this card has a 465 bios when it is a 470. Or at least the explanation doesn't make sense to me...

I did, the 465 IS a 470 with a 465 bios flashed onto it. Its how the 465s were first released. Google it lol :p
I know that's how they were released, I'm saying that doesn't explain why this 470 has a 465 BIOS on it.

No card would have been released by a manufacturer with 470 labelling and a 465 BIOS.

So I think sometime must have tried to 'underclock' it because it was erroring, unless you have a more plausible explanation?

I give up lol, have you contacted the seller to say you wish to return it?

if done by paypal, just contact the seller and tell him you want money back plus postage costs.

If he doesnt want to cooperate, point him to this thread and if he still doesnt pay the money back open a dispute/claim trough paypal.

I was never concerned about the seller not refunding because he seemed like a decent guy. Anyway he's given me a full refund and told me to just keep the card rather than mess around shipping it back.

I might try sticking the 470 BIOS back on, or maybe underclock the hell out of it and see if that stops the OCCT errors and artifacting issues. Anybody know what else I could try?
