Hello :(

Okay, full story lol.....

my setup was an i7 2600k on an ASUS P8Z68-V LX MoBo, Hyper 212 EVO cooler in push/pull config, Enermax 85+ PSU and 16GB of Patriot ram

Now, I had foolishly wired up two case fans incorrectly, there were from my old Antec 1200 case, wasn't paying attention and used a 3 way joiner block I THOUGHT was insulated inside and it wasn't, I had joined all the wires together!!

This went into my SCYTHE Fan Controller, controlling the top, rear and front fans

I built it all up, just attached 1 SATA HD and a SATA turned it on and turned around to swig from my coffee, turned back, plumes of smoke!

Pulled the plug, nearly burst into tears, went and had a fag, came back and accessed the damage

Wiring to the fans melted off and it got so hot it actually melted the internal wires in two places

Scythe fan controller smelt, and I simply stripped everything out, ordered new fans, and when they arrived, built it all again correctly.....

Now, the problem!

The Fan controller it turns out, apart from smelling a little, works fine, the heat had melted the one controller wire going into it, but I only needed three out of the four available so I simply removed the damaged one

Having rebuilt it all, and powering it all on, the fans started up, GREAT I thought... but then nothing.... not beeps, no display on the monitor, nothing

Thought I MIGHT have fried the PSU, so went out and brought a Corsair 800W one, and decided to bench test it all this time so pulled it all apart yet again, nothing attached this time though, JUST the ram installed, and the CPU, and the Cooler

so... nothing again, well tell a lie, the PSU powers on, the CPU fan starts, then it all shuts off, runs for like 2 or 3 secs only

Tried removing all the ram, and then just doing two sticks, same thing, nothing

Got an EXACT replacement Motherboard, BRAND NEW, fitted it with RAM and CPU, same thing again :(

I cannot believe it, but I think the i7 2600k is fried :(

it COULD be the memory, but I doubt it, all 4 sticks? Nothing happens when I leave the memory out, so I dont think it is that

So, what now???

Have I tried everything there is to try??

Looks like I need to renew, and I have been given a budget of £500 - £600 MAXIMUM, this is for a New CPU, MoBo and Ram

I liked the 2600K because it was suppose to be nice and easy to overclock it, not that I got that far!!

So, could you spare five mins to maybe spec me a fairly decent Combo for that price range??

Many Thanks

Chris

4670k/4770k + z87 mobo(the gigabyte d3hp seems popular if not planning on sli/xfire, otherwise d3h/ud3h), add the ram if it turns out the ones you have are faulty.

Hiya guys

RMA - not possible I dont think, I brought the parts 18 months ago via the BAY, if the CPU has a warranty, not sure how long it would be, same with the ram and the MoBo, not sure how I would go about returning parts to the actual manufactures, maybe if there was a way I could to have them tested at least, so I knew exactly what was screwed

The CPU and the Ram is a little dated now, the ram was Patriot Signature 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Module so there is a lot faster available now

Just want to buy the components within the budget, with some room for Overclocking at some point, the GFX card will be the only thing I need to replace at some point, its a few years old now, but does BF fine for me ;) Its a Sapphire Radeon HD 6950

Yeah tried that freddie same result, nothing :(

Never been a fan of the Gigabyte Mainboards, always been an ASUS man myself, anyone rate the gigabyte d3hp

just want one thats Noobie friendly, and is easy to use when it comes to the overclock really

You could try going through Intel for the RMA, just tell them you lost the invoice. Warranty on retail 2600k is 3 years, so it is still covered, as they were only released in 2011. Worth a try.

Ok looks great... one thing missing unless I cant see it, 6GB Sata ports?

I have two x 2TB Barracuda Drives, both 6GB SATA

Am I losing too much on this factor, or is there a board as good as that one with the capabilities of 6GB SATA?

On another note, I have 1 x SSD Drive I was going to use on the ASUS Board, as it said the system would boot quicker using that as a storage drive, once the operating system was installed (New to this bit lol)

So ideally, I will have 1 x SATA Blu-Ray Rom Drive, and 5 possibly 6 HDs, which is a LOT of SATA Ports :(

6 HDD's .... O.o thats a lot of storage but you will not see any performance lost plugging your (SATA 3 HDD's in to a SATA 2 port on the motherboard). HDD's can't saturate a SATA 2 controller let alone SATA 3 SSD's on the other hand is another kettle of fish.

DO you really need all that storage space in your desktop? if you need it I would just put a PCI-e to SATA 2 break out card.

Yeah I have a fair few HDs >:-)

Torrents, music and films, Games, loads of stuff, also my other half is an inventory clerk for independant estate Agents, so one 1TB drive is hers alone for all the property pics, they have to be kept for 12 months, so another 1TB is the backup, although I could move to external for those

Now, the Motherboard you said about, yep not to bad at all, but would either of these be an improvement??

Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

or this as I am an ASUS man :)

Asus Z87-PLUS Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Lastly, I was thinking about the lazy mans approach lol

Pre Built, no hassles as already overclocked and tested, just plug n play

These two not sure which LOL

The first one I actually LOVE the orange, and its got faster ram in it, is it a lot faster than the second one?? never sure about the ram lol

What do you guys think??

The Z87 only have 6GB ports. Both mobos you linked have 8x6GB ports. You could always get 5.25" hdd hotswap drive bay. That is what I use, I have 7xhdd for storage and back ups. 3 in the case all the time, back up drives stick them in the drive bay when I need to update them. Makes life a lot easier.

but the motherboards I linked are better in any way than the first cheaper option??

See all this techno stuff moves so quick im out of touch lol

The cheaper one didnt have 6GB SATA I thought, only 3GB SATA Connectors, which is why I linked the two above as both have 6GB SATA Ports
