First build spec check

Ah okay thanks. If price didn't matter, would you rather go with the i5 3570k with the p8z77, or the fx 8350 with the msi 990 xa??

Is Haswell really worth the extra dollar?

It depends on your needs. For gaming, you can have a much better performing system with the FX-8320 (not 8350 - it's not worth the extra on a budget) because you can get a far better graphics card for the same money.

If you don't want that high performing graphics card, then a Haswell system will be a better all-rounder.

(So if cost were totally irrelevant, you'd always go Haswell.)

Sorry for the noobishness, don't know how to copy the basket properly...
If i went for this build what would you change about it at first glance? WOuld it be better to downgrade the GPU and go for haswell as opposed to ivybridge?

I definitely wouldn't drop down from the 7850 to get Haswell, no.

You'll get a minor bump in performance from Ivy Bridge to Haswell, but you'll be buying current tech instead of the previous set.

Thanks RJC!
And okay teppic noted! Also what is the difference between the 7850 you posted compared with the earlier one which cost less? And are the free games with this one?

Yup, exactly - the games are in the more expensive one, not the cheaper one. With 8 top rated games included it's a brilliant deal.

Ah where does it say the free games? Okay I think I'll likely go with the build above but with the 8320, and why did you pick that mobo over the one mentioned earlier? Thanks a lot for this btw! Helps a lot.

As above - the slightly more expensive one is a Gigabyte, the other MSI. The Gigabyte has the better chipset as well.

The 8350 is just a higher clocked version of the 8320. They should overclock pretty much the same.

Ah yes sorry I see now.
Okay pretty much sorted but if I can't spend more than 230 on the cpu and mobo, keeping everything else the same, should I go for the 3470 and pz877 or the 8320 and the gigabyte mobo?? They are about the same price. Decisions... :-\

Most people would recommend the Intel build - however, it can't be overclocked while the AMD build can be, to the extent where it'd perform a lot better in most games, and in a lot of multithreaded apps.

I personally would go straight for the FX-8320 over the 3470, however it'd be a tougher choice between the 3570K and FX-8320.

Okay so if I went 3570k with the p8z11 over the 8320 and gigabyte mobo that should be worth the little extra? It's about 265 for that combo.
Motherboard wise would there be any difference? And the extra 90 for a 128gb SSD should prove worth it in the long run.

Okay I'm ready to pay for this following build. Will it all go together well and work well with enough power etc and the SSD will it go well with the system? Thanks.

I5 3570k - £186
HIS HD 7850 2048MB - £162
ASUS P8z77-V LX - £86
Toshiba 7k100.D 1TB - £49.99
SanDisk Extreme SSD 120GB 2.5” - £84
OCZ Zs Series 550W ’80 plus bronze’ power supply - £49.99
OcUK 24x DVD+- SATA rewriter (Black) - £20
Total 702 including shipping

The FX-8320 compares very well against a 3470 in most games - not as well in CPU-bound games like World of Warcraft or Starcraft 2, but you'd still be getting good performance. If you overclock it, it'll far outperform a 3470 for most games.

I'd pick this CPU over a 3470, if you cannot afford to get a 4670K.

I do agree that a 8320 is a better choice than a 3470 overall if you can't afford a K series. But for ref you cannot clock a 8320 high enough to beat a 3470 in WoW due to the i5's IPC advantage.
