David Cameron urges internet firms to block child abuse images

I was thinking about this earlier. With my last mobile contract you had to opt in just to be able to get on most forums. A right pain in the arse.

What does it mean though what do they class as porn? Does this mean Deviantart and other such sites are going to be blocked?

Now I’m not one for conspiracies but the whole idea of opt in just seems like a way of the government creating a list of people who watch porn so they can then go on to profile them.

So there’s a rape in a town involving the victim being tied up bondage style, well John Smith who lives in the next street to were the rape happened watches bondage porn so it must have been him.

Maybe I’m just over thinking it but…

This the worry as to where the line is drawn. Personally I think it's a badly drawn out policy by the government who have demonstrated a lack of understanding of the issues around the net time and time again and lets be honest they have bigger issues to deal with than blocking mumsnet forum members 15 year old sons getting their fapping material. Which they'll fail in doing anyway. I understand wanting to tackle the child abuse stuff but ISPs and industry are all over this anyway and as has already been pointed out the organisation that does tackle this had their money cut so it's clearly not that high up the priority list. I really don't understand the purpose of this as it's certainly not going to win any votes as any gained from parents who want to pass up their responsibility as parents is offset by those lost in the young male category and those who support an uncensored internet. Perhaps it's just a case of trying to look busy in a time when child abuse is in the spotlight.

I do however worry that if they can force ISPs to filter out one thing (that isn't illegal) what else might they add to the list later down the line?

Surely by blocking access to content online the people who truly are "into" it will have to find another way to get their fix. Which could involve a lot more serious crime taken to the streets :(

Ignorance is bliss.

"Please won't anyone think of the children?!"

Stupid law, and further infringements on the internet. Not surprised at all if it goes through, and will do utterly nothing other than create a list of "deviants" for the government/ISPs to watch even more closely, whilst the child abuse carries on for encrypted networks like TOR/Onion.

Surely they'll all get wrapped up in this too? That being said don't most of these already filter out adult sites by default unless you turn off the filter?
The point is the popularity will increase, due to mobile phone contracts being private (Belonging to the individual) where as internet access is at a household level & shared usually.

TLDR version : people will use mobiles for naughty material & be able to pretend not look at naughty material.

Does anyone actually believe this will go through?

You'd be naive to think it won't.

I understand that for Politicians this sounds very attractive, but the reality is that you just make it a little bit more difficult. You can never block it all without seriously restricting the freedom of the Internet.

Good idea in principle, but completely unenforceable without impossibly harsh censorship.

I would guess that it will be fairly easy to get around for any underaged kid who wants to, while their parents spend even less time supervising their online activities thinking that their child is completely safe from viewing anything they should not see.

The actual implementation is just the ISPs offering the parental controls when you first log in with the yes button already checked.

I think people are getting a bit carried away here. Just opt in to adult content and nothing changes. It's just a parental control with default settings.

Whilst illegal it's still accessible for people who wish to find it, just like terrorism handbooks etc.

And will continue to be even after the block. If you want that stuff, you're unlikely to be dissuaded by a simple ISP block.

This thread seems to have split into both a discussion about blocking child abuse images, and blocking regular pornography. There probably needs to be some clarification because I imagine many people are for the former but against the latter, simply on the basis that the latter isn't illegal.
