Wanting to go away for around 10 days, somewhere really nice. Just want somewhere in the sun, but away from drunk teenagers. Healthy budget of around £2000 for flights and hotel but would prefer sub 5 hours travelling time if this is possible?

Want decent things to do in the day and something that will make taking my SLR worthwhile yet able to chill out in the evenings in some tidy bars/restaurants. Going with the GF.

Is that a healthy budget of £2k each or £2k between the both of you ? The sub 5 hours is a bit limiting aswell as it doesnt get you across the Atlantic and it gets you as far as the Middle east (?), and Egypt on the African continent ? So its anything in that circle really

Jordan?

3.5 hour flight each way. Should be less than £300 return. No drunk kids. Plenty SLR worthy stuff in Amman, Petra and Wadi Rum and then wrap it up with some time in Aqaba to relax on the beach. Food options are a bit thin in Petra and Wadi Rum but Amman and Aqaba should be good. I only paid about £5 a night accommodation but was roughing it. Can stay somewhere nice for £30 or so. Food is cheap, water is a bit pricey but not too bad.

Croatia?

Nice and warm, food/drink is relatively cheap, plenty of lovely old buildings and fantastic landscape to photograph (especially if you go to the Plitvice national park :))

5 hours in the air doesn't get you too far. Is this a medical thing or ..?

I get paid daily, and only when I'm in work. I don't want to waste two days pay for the sake of being sat on a bloody plane for over a day if there's something that's within Europe or the middle east etc. Saying that I wouldn't discount it, I've been looking at going back to Florida or going to Mexico etc.

That Thailand boat trip thing someone posted the other week, iirc that was around £2k

Moore than 5hrs flight, but nt insane like Australia.

Im a contractor as well. My thinking is why bother earning that much money if you're not going to enjoy it. We have spent £15k on holidays this year not including spending money, I dont bother thinking about the money lost through not working else the holiday gets very expensive, you only live once. :D

I would go along with Haggisman (not literaly) and go to Croatia if you were to stick with your current criteria

Italian & French Riviera.

Very short travel time, no idiots.

Or just travel around France.....hundreds of amazing hotels, culture food & drink.

So after NEVER being on a proper holiday in my life, where are the best places to start looking?

Closest I came was going to Dordogne region in France for a week. Which was nice. I just fancy a beech and nice hotel, with awesome views.

I can never stay in the same place for too long....

Start in Nice and work toward Italy. Have a look on Mr & Mrs Smith / http://www.relaischateaux.com/ for Hotels

Egypt looks nice but I am put off by the riots kicking off all the time.

The main reasons to go to Egypt are currently all a little risky, unless you a dive addict or love souless beach resorts I'd give it a miss.

For your budget and flight time I would seriously consider Croatia as suggested by another poster it is a stunning country with some great beaches, scenary and history. I've not been but it is always on our list we just like to hit up the long haul while we still can!

Brilliant attitude I've worked with loads of contractors (to chicken to do it myself!) and I've never understood those that work 365 whats the point in earning all that money and putting up with the insecurity of it all unless you enjoying the rewards?
