Liverpool are briefing the press that the clause only requires them to inform Suarez of the bid (and possibly allow him to talk to the bidding club) - not force them to sell.

I know this discussion has been round the houses a bit but it seems like a pretty pointless clause that just wastes everyone's time i.e. Suarez and Club X thrash out a deal and then Liverpool veto it.

I suppose the idea may have been that Liverpool felt over £40m would be around the sort of level they'd give genuine consideration to offers and were happy to include the clause if it kept Suarez's agent happy. Still a bit bizarre though as you'd have thought Suarez camp would be pushing hard for a genuine buyout figure rather than a trigger point for dialogue which you'd expect to happen anyway most of the time.

Barca boss on 16th July

"I know he has received offers from other teams," said Vilanova.
"But Cesc has told me he wants to stay here. He has told me it is his dream to stay with Barcelona."
Vilanova added: "He doesn't want to go to other teams for money reasons or playing time. He knows there is competition for places here, but his decision is to stay. I am relaxed about the situation."

well the folks that laughed when I said £35m wasn't enough were soon proved wrong if 40m has been rejected

BBC reporting 40,000,001 as fact and the "release clause" being they they have to consider it and inform the player

"Luis, we had a bid for 40m, considered it for 3 seconds and told then where to go"

I believe those quotes are quite a bit older than that.

That seems a really strange clause to me, not quite sure what the purpose of it is?

I hope we get him, we would have so much depth up front, Podolski who will do nothing but improve, Giroud also, Walcott, Suarez...

Robbo why would it matter if those quotes (i took those dates from the bbc website who attended the press conference they are taken from) were older????

Who knows. If true then it sounds a bit like a compromise between Liverpool and Suarez's agent. We wouldn't have wanted a firm clause that forces us to sell, equally Suarez's camp would have wanted some assurances that we'd consider letting him go should he wish to leave this summer.

I mentioned previously that a guy, who's fairly clued up on these matters, doesn't believe a minimum fee release clause can legally be enforced in the UK. He's said today that they're treated as penalty clauses in the UK, which are illegal.

"Luis, we had a bid for 40m, considered it for 3 seconds and told then where to go"

so if the clause has been met. are they saying they've notified suarez (as the clause states?) or the board have rebuffed it, without including suarez and his agent?

where is suarez now?

Still if Liverpool get 40m for Suarez they could spend £35m on Carroll again!!! O those glory days...

Rather have Giroud and Suarez up front next season than a fading RVP...

BTW my local bookies best tip is on Man U to finish 5th or lower next season.
