Help!

I have about £150 and am thinking of buying a tablet.

Want to mainly use it for web browsing on the sofa when I cba to use the main PC and phone can be a bit small if showing browsing etc to others.

With the Nook HD being £99 currently and the Kindle Fire HD £139 which is the better option, or should I go Nook HD+ or something totally different.

For what i want to se it for is it worth rooting them? How easy is it to do and can you go back to stock if required?

Thanks

Nexus 7 is a true Android device, with full access to the Play store (including the Kindle app, which is very good use it myself). Making it much more versatile.

Yep, get a Nexus 7. 16GB version can be had for £150, but there is a new version due out literally within days (if the rumours are correct), which looks like it will a bit more expensive than the current version (£180 vs £160 for the current version, again based on current rumours) but a decent upgrade. Of course this also means the "old" N7 will probably be on sale everywhere as shops get rid of old stock ;):D

That's good to know, it's hard to decide. I'm slightly favouring the Nook HD+, 9" 1920x1280 display with 16gb onboard and takes up to 64gb via SD card for £149. Comes with play store as well so apps etc won't be an issue.

Versus a nexus 7 with 7" 1280x800 display and no SD card BUT full android experience at £160/170

Given that primarily i'm using it for web, ebook and film am I better off with the bigger better screen over the full android experience?

The New N7 will have a 1920x1200 screen, as well as (based on rumoured specs, which are pretty much confirmed) the same quad core cpu as in the Nexus 4.

One thing to consider is ergonomics - the Nexus can be held in one hand vertically comfortably, ideal for in bed reading, or using on the move. You'll also get the latest android updates as soon as they come out, so when Key Lime Pie (5.0) is released probably later this year, the nexus will get it and the nook won't.

For me, it's a no brainer. Nexus 7 without a doubt. If you have a PC world/Currys nearby, they will have both a N7 and the Nook HD+ on display so you can have a play, that will help you decide.

Personally, I'm waiting to order a new Nexus 7 32GB with 4g :D

Latest issue of PC Pro has the Asus Fonepad as the Labs winner and the Nook as the recommended.
The bottom line was that both the Asus and Nook offered "slightly more" for the money, the Nexus slips just behind them.

*Edit*
This of course doesn't take into account the new revision of Nexus 7 due "more or less now" as that wasn't in the test.

Hmm, think i'll go have a play with them in store somewhere then and see if the 7" screen will be enough as other than that the new Nexus is sounding quite nice. Think i'll wait for that to launch and decide then

Thanks for all the input

I like the Nexus but why or why they not offer one with memory slot extension o_O
TBH 16 GB its not a lot and constantly moving stuff in and out make is less portable then intended

I picked up a Nook HD+..think it was about £110

rooted and with CM10.1 running on it (very easy to follow guide on xda)

Basically wanted a relatively cheap tablet but with a decent high res screen, just so I could give them a go.

Seems my laptop never gets used now :o

The screen really is lovely, especially watching HD content. I'm experiencing some slowdown with chrome though, couple of other smaller issues such as the wallpaper not always covering the entire screen after running a few things in fullscreen, I guess the rom's for this aint quite as polished as the various phone ones but overall for the price I'm very impressed and I used to be quite strongly against tablets in general :o

That new Nexus 7 sounds quite interesting, I've not properly played with a 7" tablet but since my phones nearing 5" I personally wanted something that felt quite a bit bigger

Well in the end I went for the Nook HD+ and i'm very pleased with it, it seems perfect for what i want, the screen is excellent and the whole experience feels slick and fast. Can run the few android apps and games i want perfectly and web/movies are great.

Overall really pleased, great price, great tablet, 9" screen that is lovely and SD expansion as well.
