Hello

My dads computer has recently broken after 10 years of service and instead of buying one i thought id build one instead.

All he uses it for is internet, file storage, google earth but he wants it to be fast.

I need abit of help with picking parts and with compatibility.

I would really appreciate some help.

Thanks.

CPU Intel Core i3-3240 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail

Motherboard- Not sure on which chipset to get.

RAM - need MOBO 1st

HDD - Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD10EZRX) **SINGLE PLATTER** HDD

Disk drive - LG GH24NS95 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

I already have a case,monitor, and peripherals

Thanks

Drop the i3. For an extra £35 you can go Haswell.

The rest is fine

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4430 3.00GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £149.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £99.95
1 x Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £35.99
Total : £296.72 (includes shipping : £9.00).

Thanks but i think that take the price a little too high considering i still need a PSU and OS and dont think he would need the extra power

If it's speed your after, then a Pentium and an SSD may be better than an i3. I had to do a build just before Christmas with similar needs and I ended up going the Pentium/SSD route. Works very well and quick for its needs.
YOUR BASKET
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 64GB 2.5 SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT064M4SSD2) £68.99
1 x Intel Pentium G640 2.80GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £52.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) HDD £39.95
1 x MSI H61M-P31-G3 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £38.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED34096M1600HC11DC) £29.99
1 x OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £19.99
Total : £262.30 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Thanks for the suggestions but i think i want to stick with the i3.

Any suggestions on a motherboard to go with it as i have no clue about the pros and cons of different chipsets.

Thanks

The i3 won't perform any better for him and will cost you more, but it's up to you. An APU will give extra performance for Google Earth too.

If you go the i3 route then just get a cheap B75 chipset, since you can't overclock it.

I'd suggest you go with a cheaper CPU if you still want an i3. The 3220 is a good buy and is £20 cheaper for 100Mhz less speed (not noticeable at all).

Intel i3 3220 3.3Ghz - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-430-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1671 £93
ASRock B75 Motherboard - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-087-AK&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2307 £53
4GB Corsair Vengence Memory - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-308-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517 £36

Total: £142 + HDD, PSU + OS.

And don't get a WD Caviar Green as a main hard drive. As a backup drive they are perfect, as a main disk they are far too slow. Ideally you should get an SSD and a cheap Seagate 1TB 7200.12, but at least, get a WD Black, Seagate 7200.12 or Samsung 7200rpm drive. Otherwise your dad will not thank you for a slow PC.

If you are dead set on that i3 then buy it. You can get better performance for your money though, especially as it's not going to be used for anything taxing at all.

Any number of socket 1155 motherboards will do for an i3, as will pretty much any dual channel DDR3

Pick any motherboard and ram from these..it really won't make any difference as far as performance or compatibility is concerned

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z77-DS3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £79.99
1 x Gigabyte H77M-D3H Intel H77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £76.99
1 x Gigabyte B75M-D3V Intel B75 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £59.99
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £35.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £35.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED34096M1600HC11DC) £29.99
Total : £330.94 (includes shipping : £10.00).

If you want a quick feeling PC then an SSD is a must and I would suggest not getting the Green version HDD. If your set on just getting a HDD then at least make it the Caviar Black or a Seagate Barracuda. It will make a huge difference (especially the SSD)!

Edit: Just realised someone else suggested this!!!! Definite worth considering.
