Best time to get an iPhone or nexus?

I am planning to get my dad his first smart phone. He doesn't need the best thing out there, so I am thinking of getting him an iPhone that is a few generations old (eg iPhone 4) or a Google nexus. I would assume the best time to get an iPhone is when the new one is released (as I think they drop the price of the older ones). As the nexus phone was very cheap to begin with the best time to buy would be at release.

What is the likely release dates for the next iPhone and nexus.?

I predict around October time for both devices. If price matters, then I would buy the Nexus 4, it's a really good price for the hardware it has.

Price doesn't matter, but there is no need to spend too much as he won't be using it to its full capacity. Will the current nexus get a price drop when the new one comes out (or do they just manage inventory such that there is little overlap)?)

Nexus phone not till November/December. Last 3 devices have come out around then and that is probably when klp will come out.

They will probably stop selling the current nexus 4 when it is released, like what they have done with the nexus 7

I did the same with the iPhone 5 and don't regret it.

Was an android guy from the start pretty much and loved tinkering for years, but there comes a point in life when I just don't have the time to optimize a phone and it's ROM.

iOS 7 is absolutely superb even in beta form, total pleasure to use and looking forward to it's final release.

Android seems to have slowed down a bit lately (got a HTC One in the house too).

Apple have eased up on the control in recent times, to me iOS 7 feels like a polished Android and where Google should be by now.

I am not sure about the need for tweaking on android, I think historically people have just tweaked things because they could, not because it was really necessary.Going from an iphone to a Note 2, i have left the Note pretty much as it was, and i have never really bothered with the widgets!

Exactly!

I have no idea why people tweak away with android and then list that as a disadvantage!? :o :p

You don't "need" too. Most, if not all android phones these days work perfectly well out of the box and the skins are acceptable.

And the even funnier thing is when people blame problems like slow downs, battery drain etc. on android and the phones themselves, however, chances are it is most likely down to the custom ROM as these are well known possible niggles that you CAN encounter if you go down that route. It is the main reason I don't want to root etc. any more devices as I like to just have a working device out of the box and know that if I do have a problem then it is because of an app, hardware rather than possibly being due to the custom ROM, kernel or/and other many tweaks thus having to start a fresh install etc.

There must be something wrong with that HTC One then. I've been using one as my main device for over 5 months and it's not slowed down at all. I also have (amoungst other devices) an iPhone 4S, Nokia 925 and Blackberry Z10 and I use the One as my daily. I use a completely stock ROM and have absolutely no need to change any ROMs, root it or whatever.

If anything I find older iPhones slow down quite noticeably with each iteration of iOS.
