Lots of "Free Games" Deals, but..

Hi all,

I'm a newbie when it comes to this sort of things really but..

I've been looking to buy a mid range graphics card for a little while and have seen a lot of free games bundle deals, that seem pretty good to be fair, if you want the games anyway.

I was wondering why they don't just sell the card cheaper and forget the free games? As I personally would not be interested in any of the games that are free. (I don't like FPS's and most of the free ones appear to be)

Perceived value.

AMD or Nvidia might be paying £1 for a game but can say it's worth £30.

If they knocked £1 off the price of a graphics card you wouldn't notice it.

They have marketing budgets, in these circumstances the marketing budget is spent on free games promotionals.

They'd be spending money for marketing anyway, and what better marketing is there than the type that adds perceived value to products?

+1. There are deals in the background between the companies also. And it is a good way of getting advertising for said games if they are stamped all over gcards that people view and want... even if they don't buy

Good points cheers.

To me seems a bit silly for the games company's though, as surely it would dramatically lower the price of the games, with people having loads of download codes to sell / give to friends who may otherwise have bought the game retail.

This annoys me too. Wish the 7950 (which really is the only true upgrade available to me) I have to spend £250 quid!! Wish it was under £200. But....... Can't have everything

It wouldn't be under £200 without the free games though. As said above, they probably only pay a couple of quid for each of the games. So without them you'd maybe save a tenner, it's better this way as you can sell those free games for more than that.

Oldest trick in the book. It's a way of artificially propping up the price of the product, in a way that it doesn't damage the customer's perception of value. The real purpose behind this is to manage pricing across the entire current and future product family.

For example, AMD could ditch the never settle program and sell their top end 7970 cards at say £250. But that would mean lowering prices on the entire of the product range, high to low end. That would obviously be very bad for business, because the selling price for one of the products may be at risk of hitting a level where it doesn't command a margin.

In addition, this tactic bolsters the perceived value of up-and-coming products. If they can keep the selling price of the 7970 as high as possible, they'll have set a nice precedent for putting an inflated RRP on their new 9970.

These people know exactly what they're doing.

Funny thing is, I can't even find any of the gfx cards I'm interested in without games, I actually would rather save a tenner to be honest :p

shame your not able to access the MM, they'd get snapped up for more than a tenner ;) a few more posts over the years would have got you in.. you also would have got free postage from OcUK :o

This seems as good a place to ask as any.

Someone posted earlier that the 7850 IceQ gets 9 free games in another thread, how do you see what games the cards come with now? They don't seem to list them on the individual product page anymore.

I ask as a mate needs a new card for a HTPC with light gaming but thinks it's overkill, it probably is for him but if it comes with 9 games i'd buy most of them off him to bring it to the same price as the crappy cards he's looking at then we both win.

I generally just look through others posts, I'll need to talk more :p

Only half way to MM myself :( and cant avail of the free postage as I'm across the water in N.I. lol.

In response to OP - just whats' been said by other members already, big companies have deals with other big companies, get a very good deal as they are purchasing in bulk and effectively free advertising for their games aswell, then the graphics company can put the games on a deal/promo with their games and quote full price to the customers as if they are losing out on the £30 (or whatever the rrp for the game is), personally IDM it, gotten some really good games out of it :P
