*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

I wouldn't be surprised to see an October launch for the ps4. Sony will want it out before the xbox and if the rumours are to be believed the production is going very smoothly. Also, isn't there a big American holiday when most of their christmas shopping is bought (black friday?) at the start of November? They'll want it in stores before then.

Thats rubbish - how would they have coped on 4Gb GDDR5? Just makes it even more astounding how well optimised the PS3/X360 OS memory footprint is...

No doubt 4.5Gb is more than enough for games, just seems a waste how much is assigned to the OS - hmmm just thought maybe hibernation needs it?

Hmm it's becoming more and more similar to the eggbox. I think I may end up cancelling my ps4 order as it's only really going to end up slightly better than the eggbox and I do actually prefer the controller. I guess I got caught up in the hype and we're now seeing that the consoles are not so different after all..... If the rumor is too be believed.

something fishy going on here as even they say in the article in leaked documents before it was half a gig, and im sure sony have said its 1gig. just cant stand these well placed sources especially when the nda is lifted and we know 90% of the ps4 specs.

Indeed. Fact is though it's still £100 cheaper, and has a slightly better GPU and memory.

I'm going to wait to see how this pans out.

There's something wrong here, it doesn't make sense. There is no way that the OS is using this much RAM when you consider the upgrade to 8GB was done so late on (just before the PS4 announcement)

The only way this would be possible would be if there has been a sudden massive increase in OS RAM usage since the announcement, but games are already deep into development at this point and surely this would have screwed them up with constant RAM changes?

According to GAF, the devs had access to 512Mb of RAM before the upgrade!!!!! Looks like THEY had to upgrade to 8Gb.

This is crazy I tell you. I'm in two minds what to do now.

TBH for the next few years it wont be at all noticeable, having that much mem targeted at games is still significant. Its more the case that I cant see the real reason to target the OS for 3.5Gb - now I know some of thats for future proofing, but thats a lot to future proof for, just feels like the next generation of consoles are going to have quite a bloaty set of OSes, when sadly some of us just want to throw in a BD and press play game and not much else...

The current consoles are essentially useless when you're in a game though, especially the PS3. If you want to do anything other than look at your friends list or trophies, you need to quit the game or app you're in. They're clearly orientating the next-gen consoles towards being able to just 'suspend' a game while you watch a movie, browse the store, use Netflix etc etc, and then just resume where you left off rather than having to go through the loading process all over again.

The article is done by the same guy, by the way, that immediately posted an article claiming the PS4 could only record 7 minutes of video when it was revealed that the XB1 only had 5 minutes of record time.

His source was a Develop conference. That was done weeks ago. And he decided that it was only news that very day. And was proven to be wrong.

I'm not saying this is false, but I am saying the person reporting it isn't the best when it comes to details.

Yeah I think i'll be waiting for a more reliable source before I believe any of this.
