Right fellas , recently went crossfire with 2 his 7950 ice q s. Must say so far everything seems fine been playing BioShock infinite and apart from a bit of what I think is microstutter its running smooth . Now I've done a bit of reading and watched some vids about over clocking my GPUs. Now I don't want to start messing with voltages just a small over clock on the clocks would be fine.
Have I got this right but do you just use ab to alter clocks and radeon pro for the microstutter and vsync stuff?. Also when you have over clocked do you have to keep afterburner running for the over clock to work?.Also if you are tweaking do you have to keep radeon pro running as well? You may well gather that I am rather nooby with this stuff....any advice would be most welcome

You need both running for both to work. I think both should minimise to tray to stay out of your way and both should be able to start with windows.

The overclocking in radeonPRO iirc is just the same as AMD Overdrive featured in CCC, so no voltage control should you require it.

I would advise to use Afterburner for overclocking as it will give you better control over everything as well as better monitoring even if you aren't adjusting voltages. You can also set a custom fan curve in afterburner to keep things cool :)

LtMatt should be able to give you some pointers as to keeping things nice and smooth on radeonpro with a pair of 7950's, fairly sure for the most part its a case of changing the flip queue and setting a frame limiter.

Check the following threads out, should answer most of your questions.

First we have the AMD GPU Overclock thread.

Second is the RadeonPro - How To Remove Micro stutter thread.

Depending on how efficient the new amd frame pacing drivers are, i may revisit and update the RadeonPro thread now that ive become fully accustomed with crossfire.

Cheers Matt. Just a quick one before I read both threads. Right I am running a 60 hz monitor so is it best to use vsync . Also if not why have a game running at say 120 fps when your monitor can only really handle 60, does it make game play any smoother?

No, 120fps on a 60hz display will cause screen tearing and look/feel like poop. You'll want to keep the frames limited to 59/60/62 to get the best out of it.

Either that or treat your self to a 120hz monitor and rarely have to worry about limiting frames ever again :D

You might want to disable vsync in twitch shooters, as it can add input lag. However i find if you keep triple buffering off, and lock the fps to 60 then its pretty much like playing with vsync off anyway. Personally i prefer vsync as it keeps the image tear free and stops my gpu's from chugging out excessive fps. Vsync can solve microstutter on crossfire as well sometimes. On the majority of titles i play microstutter is not an issue whether vsync is on or off though.

Thanks for both replays chaps, as for getting a 120 hz monitor that's a completely different story, I've read that much info about ....120 hz v higher res monitors I think my head might pop...lol

:p

Its a tough one, its really only something you could decide after using both types unfortunately. I still get the urge from time to time to try out 1440/1600p.
