I'm replacing my Peugeot V6 Coupe's gearbox oil tomorrow, and apparently need (according to the 406 forum) 75w-80. However, I've just been to my local motor factors who looked up 75w-90, which is what I bought. Is this likely to be a problem?

Cheers!

No.

The first number of the designation specify the oil viscosity at cold temperature, the second number specifies the oil viscosity at high temperature.

The higher number is better.

Yeah, I know that. Just wondering whether using the oil I bought will be a problem more than anything.

I'd take it back personally, get the proper stuff from Peugeot themselves.

Back when I had my 306, people would only use the PSA Oil.

Direct from Peugeot is cheap, always worth checking prices with Peugeot because they're usually not too bad.

I bought 2 1litre bottles yesterday and it's £7a litre, and apparently the best stuff you can get as well. Sod being fobbed off with the wrong stuff.

i'd want to double check before you use it.

From what i remember the gearbox in the wifes clio 197 takes 75-80 and it REALLY doesn't like 75-90 as a lot of owners will attest to, however a lot of places recommend 75-90..

The Peugeot/PSA gearboxes are very sensitive to the right grade of oil! I've been told this many times. Don't use the 75W90, take it back and get 75W80.

Well I had to fill the 'box and used the oil as I really couldn't be without the car and don't have the opportunity to get anything else before Monday. Both the local motor factors and Halfords oil charts recommended the 75w 90. The gearbox seems fine so far and feels (possible placebo) a little smoother/less notchy. If it does complain over the next few days, I'll change it.

You're probably correct about the box feeling nicer, though I think that's like to be due to having new oil, rather than a different grade.

Hopefully the 90 works out for you :)
