£350 PC upgrade vs PS4?

Currently have an i3 2100, 8GB DDR3 and 6870 1GB for gaming and I was all set to just buy a PS4 in November and leave my PC as it is for now but I was curious if I could get better gaming performance from upgrading my PC instead.

Basically can you spend £350 (same as a PS4 at launch) on a CPU, motherboard and graphics card and get the same or better performance than the next gen consoles?

I'm not looking to buy right this second, more so in October when it's my birthday (other half is treating me), but assume specs will be similar in a couple months or so anyway.

EDIT: Example build FX6300, ASRock 990FX Extreme3, and a 660Ti 2GB is about £350 give or take a few quid, how would that fair?

I had thought of getting a i5 2500k, but 99% of second hand ones will have been overclocked and possibly abused with voltage which is my only concern, also Z68 motherboard I have is a bit old now. Is a 7950 much better than a 660Ti?

A 7950 once clocked we be on par with a stock 7970/680
And not everyone abuses there cpu's, they are certainly worth looking out for. The board you have maybe old but is still good.

The spec you suggested with the 660ti is about the best you can do for £350, and it'd definitely be a big upgrade. A 2nd hand 2500K would let you get the better graphics card though, which you can still use if you decide to upgrade the cpu/board later.

I agree that a second hand 2500k/3570k is a good choice. They are excellent gaming CPUs. Generally CPUs are not that bad second hand since they are pretty reliable and pretty tough to cause any long term harm to them.

The CPU would make a wonderful upgrade partnered with a AMD 7870 or 7950, especially if you overclock them both.

May I hijack this thread? :P

I'm basically in the same boat as the OP, and I'm just after ideas on how to proceed (overclocking vs upgrading, etc)

Here are my system specs.

Gigabyte 890gpa-ud3h mobo
Phenom II X6 1055T cpu @2.8ghz
Radeon 6850 GPU @1GB
4GB of RAM at 1333mhz
600W Corsair PSU

My original thoughts are to OC the CPU (haven't done it before though, :S) Obviously I'd need a new cooler.

New graphics card. I'm clueless about bottlenecking, and just how high to go in terms of a quality card. I'm quite interested in switching to Nvidia as far as a card goes, as I look the look of them in terms of drivers, and the graphics settings optimizing tech they have.

Budget-wise I would say 300 - 500 notes for the whole adventure, which would be the equivalent of what I'd be spending console-wise on "Next Gen."

P.S Of course there are other factors like getting an SSD, new PSU etc, upgrading the RAM, second monitor. But I'm not treating those as priorities right now.

Many thanks.

If you want to go the over clocking route ( i wouldnt worry about trying it we have many great clockers always willing to help) what case do you have for after market cooler suggestions?

hmm, I was a bit naïve in thinking that size GPU dimensions wouldn't be a factor. That sucks. That's a decent price too.

Would it just block a bay or just not fit at all?
