Careers with Apple retail

But ... but you wouldn't be on your current salary if you got a job which paid more. That's how salaries which involve different numbers work.

Aye that is true, but I don't have the finances nor options to travel to a new job to earn said higher salary :P

The buses are pretty decent round here and for £50 a month you can go wherever you like so that should open up a lot more options for you. I commute 2 hours a day from wolves.

Difference between me and him... He had GCSE's only for qualifications and a years Retail experience.
I had a GNVQ in IT, BTEC in IT and was in middle of a Robotics Degree not to mention running my own Phone repair business.

Yet they hired him... LOL

Sounds as though both of you had the required qualifications but he was the one with the retail experience - admittedly you'd have thought a phone repair business would be relevant for a job that involves repairing phones but some organisations probably want all their staff working in retail outlets to have retail experience even if they are 'in the back' most of the time.

Also from their perspective they may view a person who has IT qualifications and currently studying towards a degree as not being a serious long term prospect for their retail store i.e. they think you have the potential to be 'overqualified' and at risk of moving on elsewhere once your degree is completed. Perhaps having your own business even worked against you aras well in terms of another potential risk being introduced. Whereas a school leaver with GCSEs would be more likely to stick around in a low-paid job.

My advice would be to assess such situations from the employer's perspective i.e. remember that they are looking to fill a particular role not necessarily hire the 'best person'. You may think that having a hundred bits of paper saying how fantastic you are should put you ahead, but where these types of role are concerned they may not be deemed relevant.

:O that makes perfect sense - are you a wizard!? :D

Nop, I'd much rather work for Google or MS - Google especially, everything about working there looks amazing :D

Well why don't you get a dev job then... *any* dev job? Your location says Solihull - so you're a short train ride from the 2nd biggest city in the country... there are jobs out there. There are plenty of open source projects to get involved in too.

Hmm I guess I could get a train pass, I hate commuting mind but I guess it needs to be done :P

~15 minutes on the train isn't a commute. When I was 19 I was doing nearly 2 hours to work IN London, bus - train - walk, and then doing it the other way home

lol Yea

What annoys me is that i once went for a job at an apple store to work out the back (repairs). I was not asked in for an interview yet a mate who had 1 years retail experience in a game shop got the job.

In bold is one reason they didn't hire you, the other is that your mate had experience in retail, which means he can work in the back but cover for the shop floor without any issues. You on the other hand would go ape if they asked you to cover in the shop for half an hour as you "didn't have experience / weren't hired to do that."

It means anything that involves public transport to me! :D

Buses/trains in summer at peak times.. *shudders* - So. many. loud. smelly. annoying. people. with. crying. children.

EURGHEURGHEURGHEURGH. D:

I guess you'll have to take your chaffeur-driven limo to work then, if you want a real job that isn't within walking distance of your house! :)
