Hi.
My q6600 has finally given up the ghost, so i need a replacement. I'm a student, so Intel prices are a but high, so AMD it is. I mainly play games, though my tastes have changed a bit, mainly Kerbal and wargame... Also some sketchup, music software. My question is, fx6300 series or fx8100 series. I need a new mobo and ram also.
Second question, is the pile driver chip still compatible with AM2 cpu coolers? Don't want to replace my noctua really.

Thanks

8150 is a Bulldozer, which is the generation before Piledriver. Piledriver is faster and better than Bulldozer and there where many people complaining about poor performance of that generation.

For most games a 6300 will perform similarly to the 8 core CPUs but if you can stretch to a 8320 (and possibly overclock) you may have better gaming performance for heavily demanding games such as Battlefield 4 multiplayer.

What model is your CPU cooler?

If you've been using an AM2 cooler on I guess an AM2 CPU, will your board support AM3+?

Thing is, AMD sockets and coolers are pretty universal, just if your board will be ok.

No I Was using a q6600, which is being replaced (Had it for 9 Years ish). When i bought the Noctua, it came with a bag of brackets, of which one was an AM2.

Im buying new CPU, new MOBO, RAM. I dont mind getting a new cooler, but obv. the noctua is a v.good heatsink, though I do like the look of the Alpenfohn as they have a cool name.

I did mean the piledriver chips too!

I was using an AM2 cooler on AM3+ with no change in back plates. AMD dimensions haven't changed in years as far as I'm aware so you just use an AMD backplate. Not like these Intel lot that have to change everything every time they want to change something :P

FX8350 is very good by all accounts. I'm in a tough spot deciding on 8350 or 9370 or possibly 9590...I'm using 8150 and have been for a couple of years. On air cooling, it ran stable at 4.8Ghz at 1.475v.

Lol Lets see if another thread can turn into a AMD/Intel Debate :P

I can appreciate Intel and what's what with them but I've been using AMD since 2000 and have always liked my computers. First CPU after my 486 was an AMD. Can't remember if it was an Athlon or what. I know the first computer I built I used an Athlon 2400XP.

No its an AMD/AMD debate. :)

No...is a comparison test between them all required? I think it would make for good reading perhaps.

What makes you say just WOW? Are they crap?

The 9370 and 9590 are basically pre-overclocked 8350's..

They are not worth the extra money over the 8350 as they don't perform much better.. They are many reviews around..

If going AMD the 8350/8320 is the best bet..

I won't mention intel as i dont need to :)

AM2/2+, AM3/3+, FM1 and 2 sockets take the same coolers

If you were looking to buy the FX6300/6350, I'd really consider splashing the extra for a 8320 tbh

Thanks for the replies. Personally I like both companies and have had both in the past.
Being on a very tight budget though, means I cant really afford the i5, the difference is half the cost of a Mobo.
I only game at 1680x1050 though so I doubt I will notice much difference, currently running a GTX480 as well.
Anything should be better than what I have now regardless.

Is there much between the 8350 and the 8320??

Well they're overpriced, meaning they lose their value option over the Intel stuff, and they're not better performers.

As you've got AM3+ already it has to FX83.

I don't know how you've had it a couple of years as it's not 2 years old yet (The FX8150) but meh.
