Hey guys, looking for a laptop for someone - they have their eye on a Macbook, but for the price and performance, I'm looking at some high end windows ones.

He has his on this - http://store.apple.com/uk/configure/ME665B/A?

Surely a similar priced gaming laptop from overclockers would tear it apart?

He will be using it for high res image editing and rendering, so a beasty cpu won't go a miss :)

So the one thing that stands out about Macs, is their outstanding screens that they use.
Now if he is only using the laptop for photography, the systems that OCUK sell afaik use TN panels, also OCUK do not have an option for the 95% Gamut which would be needed for photography. This would be kinda a problem, but, you can always hook the laptop up to a proper monitor which will blow the Macbooks screen away

Another thing is that OCUK systems aren't slim or as portable as a Mac either, but they offer the performance which is where the mac falls short. (they also don't cost a **** tonne)

If he plays games, I would go for:

OcUK Hardcore Gamer P150SM

i7-4800QM
16GB RAM
780M
120GB SSD
500GB 7200RPM HDD
Intel 6300

= £1410

Hmmm, he seems pretty set on Macs for portability, even though a gaming laptop would tear one apart for performance, but he does agree with that bit XD I'd just go for the windows solution!

I just saw the price on Apple, **** me.

If he buys that then whenever you're in a pub you should always insist he pays and say "You got THIS MUCH to spend on a Mac, you can buy me a beer!"

Should at least wait for the Refresh, the battery life should be a lot better, and the iGPU will be much more powerfully reducing the need for GPU in generally day to day tasks.

If he really does want to waste that kinda of crazy money then its totally fine, for image editing its amazing, the screen will be a big plus.

Yeh that is a lot of money, he is better off building his own system or get one of those ultrabooks. Although if he is to stick with MacBook, they are releasing the new ones in October that has the Haswell processors.

Ooh, I'll recommend he wait for a Haswell macbook probably then. They are very good for what they do?

Yes definitely wait if he wants a Macbook, they are even more powerful and apparently with up to a day of battery life around 12 hours from one full charge and has double life span.
