Interesting article. Looks like Nvidia/AMD need to drastically increase performance 10-fold over the next couple of generations as 4K comes into play!

So what we can take away from this article is all current high-end GPU's blow hard!

Until they sort out the display interface that gives us more bandwidth I doubt anyone bar the ultra enthusiast will be buying a 4K display soon.

It really is ridiculous how pathetic that display makes super high end cards, literally makes them look like toys and nothing more.

Turn down a few settings (often ones that make no real obvious difference - Extreme AA in Sleeping Dogs for example) and the majority of games will be playable on a single overclocked GTX780 (based on my experience of a single 780 @ 3600x1920).

In a years time GTX 780s and HD 9970s are going to more commonplace and hopefully selling for less than they will this year.

What is really going to get the debates going is that to max games out you will need more than 3gb of vram.

Is this the end of the line for DVI? It would be nice to see Displayport supported more. It can do 4k60p and is supposed to have less audio jitter than HDMI.

E: Oh yeah no, it really is the end for DVI apparently. Funny that Nvidia's primary connection for 3D is DVI - I suppose they'll have to figure something out.

I'd like to see these benches with either no, or 2xAA, seeing as 4k is going to need less AA than your standard 1080p monitor. It's a huge resource hog, so I would expect significant improvements.

12mins or so into this vid you can see the performance of sli 780s at 4k res due to Nvidia providing them with a beta driver supporting it fully.

Would you be better off using a 1600p monitor with everything maxed or a 4k monitor using your settings above. Or would it be about even?

The problem here is how many people will actually have 4k monitors? If the prices stay as they are or even around the 2k figure they aren't going to fly off the shelves. I'd rather a manufactuer brought out a legitimate 120/144hz 1600p IPS panel tbh. There's no way I'll move back to anything under 120hz now.

There should be a lot more 4k monitors/tv's about next year at reasonable price.
There's already been some low end brands announced at $900 for a 50 inch screen although they would be useless for gaming it shows prices are falling.

Also hdmi 2.0 is coming soon which will mean a lot more tv/monitors will support 120hz.

Well I've only just moved up to 1440p, so I doubt I'll be going to 4k for quite a few years yet.

Same, I'd never buy anything below 120hz again. Thing is I devour movies so I wouldn't settle for anything less than 4k120p... and not even displayport 1.2 can do that

It's been bad enough waiting for a single card that is decent at 1440P (GTX 780 does a good job). Wouldn't want to hamstring myself with a 4K monitor, I will hold out until £450 GPU's can run 4K at decent settings. So looks like I will be on 1440P for a long time yet..
