New build won't install SP1 and crashes on games and WEI?

So I've built a new system for a friend:

i5 3470
Gigabyte Z68AP-D3
4GB Corsair XMS + 4GB Crucial Balistix Sport (both running at 1333)
OCZ Vertex 2E Bigfoot 180gb SSD
ATI 5870 1GB
Old Hiper 580w PSU (old but hasn't been used for years, stored away)

So, set BIOS to ACHI for the SSD, installed Windows 7 64bit. Had the 64bit SP1 .exe ready, got 75% through and said "The remote procedure call failed".

Thought it was a bit weird but thought I would carry on and install the graphics drivers, it failed as I needed .net framework 4.0. Installed that then the drivers went on fine. Went to do Windows Experience Index and it got 1/4 way though and said could not complete test? Since then my friend has installed a bunch of updates, still no SP1 though as it hangs on 24% in Windows Update.

Whenever he runs a game it crashes to desktop. It can't be the graphics card because it was working fine before, we tried another 5870, same thing, plus the same happened with the onboard graphics. What could this be? I don't think it's a power issue as it would have crashed the whole PC? It couldn't be RAM could it? both same timings and speed?

It has also blue screened about 3 times since being built on Tuesday. The only thing I can think of now is SSD firmware update, BIOS update or reinstall Windows. It doesn't help he's on a 3g connection until he moves house in 3 weeks, paying £15 for 3gb usage!!!!

Help please!

Guess what it was?....

BIOS update fixed it! WEI went fine, SP1 installed fine and games run great! Bloody BIOS updates!

I hate BIOS updates, had a motherboard fail once and it just feels like I am playing russian roulette.
