4K gaming makes mincemeat of current GPU's!

We need something like OLED before we need 4k..The basics needs to be fixed before adding more pixels. We can already add more pixels by adding more monitors but we cant do a darn thing about the Black levels or the backlight/backlight bleeding unless we go something like OLED.. 1440p 100-120hz OLED would be an obvious buy for me.

One of the main reasons for the higher res was to get some extra visual ommph in games where you got limited by the console porting such as GTA.The game has no AA, no option of real AA and bumping up to 4K pretty much solves the issues. But as games are going to be DX11 on the consoles (hope the custom DX HAL doesnt bypass) all games have to feature at least 4xMSAA and 8xMSAA in DX11.1 right? So now what will 4k be useful for apart from swapping raw MSAA for higher resolution? Thats a good swap going by the % cost of 8x MSAA on grass etc ala Crysis 3.

And they need to seriously optimize visual effects more.Take a look at DX 9 Left 4 Dead 2 and its still a very pretty game without crappy effects like DOF and blur that chop off a huge % of frame per second.I always aaid it was a huge gimmick anyways and only there to sell Nvidia cards like Physx smoke.

The power increase does not in any way equal the graphical increase since DX9 games like source games i maxed with 8xMSAA on a 8800 GTX.Look at the frame rates on crysis on a 780 GTX and compare that to L4D2 on 8800 GTX.how many times faster is that 780 over the 8800 GTX? 5 or 6 times the power maybe yet no way does crysis 3 look six times better than l4d2.

They do not even have a interface ready for 4k nevermind 8k :P

And if you think thats insane i do believe Japan has or is in the process or sending 8K video streams over thier internet.Imagine streaming 8K movies sold via youtube/itunes into your 8k telly :D

This is a total non-issue.

4K is SO long away for mainstream gaming, if it becomes mainstream at all that is.

Only a HANDFUL of 4K monitors are out on the market right now and some people seem to think this is the sign tat 4K is here with screams and wails of "OMG I WANT ONE".

The reality is they are expensive and still VERY much 'proof of concept items' in the consumer/home buyer segment.

When 4K becomes common place in filmography and television and 4K becomes popular for the home TV then you miht see some serious traction.

As of now......nobody is buying 4K monitors for gaming. Anyone who is has more money than sense, wants to swing around epeen or is simply foolish.

Yup I agree.

Even if/when 4K becomes standard for TV, I still doubt PC's will follow suit. You can only take screen resolution so far before it becomes redundant. 4K will work in the home providing you buy a large enough TV to make use of it. Who though is going to buy 50+ inch monitor for their PC ? Sorry, but I just can't see 4K catching on for PC's.

Eventually I would want OLED 120hz 4K monitors with GPUs that can drive them, who am I kidding why not?

But we have bigger fish to fry and newer current-gen monitor tech to enjoy in the here and now/the next 2-3yrs.

Who knows, maybe we will see 120hz IPS soon? ( i don't know if it's even theoretically possible!)

Surely this is only the case because the quality was on high.

Some things don't scale much as resolution increases, e.g. how much stuff is going on, texture quality.

Some stuff directly scales based on resolution, e.g. MSAA

So we just need something that looks pro, without having too much of the resolution-dependent stuff, then we can all run it on our current cards. Winnah

I don't get why people are saying 4K is so distant. There are already setups that can run AAA games in 3x 1080 Eyefinity no prob. And you can do higher than 4K with UHD monitors in Eyefinity.

For instance I remember running BC2 & FC2 in 5760x1080 on my 5850 xfire setup in 2010.

4k is so far away from current gaming tech it's not even worth considering.

I run plenty of games at 7680x1600 (three 2560x1600 screens) on dual GTX780s. That's already 50% more pixels than a 4k screen (12MP vs 8MP for 4k). Granted, there are plenty of recent games that won't run at 60fps with everything turned up, but most games play just fine.

A pair of high-end 20nm GPUs (mid 2014) should be plenty enough to play anything that's out today, in 4k, at 60fps+. Of course we'll have to see how the next-gen consoles shake things up, but for anything available today at least we're really not far off 'cracking' 4k with two GPUs.

i dont see how this comment can be true, the only thing 4k is good for at this moment in time is pc gaming, as there is next to no 4k content for films, none of the consoles will play games at 4k unless the tv up scales, so that leaves pc gaming alone which will and currently does support 4k, there are systems out now that are pushing more than 8 million pixels, so why is it so far away, the only thing stopping 4k from being mainstream is the price, not the games, which is the same reason why 1600p monitors are not mainstream, because the average person is not willing to pay more than 2-3 hundred pounds on a monitor.
