Hello,
We are building a new PC. My last build many years ago was using an
Abit NF7-S ver 2.0 with an overclocked mobile AMD cpu! Although this machine still runs well it is time to build a new beast, hopefully something that will last regarding performance and reliability.
Current PC runs using 2 x HDD in Raid 0 with no reliability issues.

This is what we have worked out so far but need advice about best RAM, HDD and PSU.

So far these seem tasty components but are open to advice! Budget seems to be about £1800.

I have just picked up (or awaiting delivery) of 4770k. Gigabyte Z87oc, MSI 780oc and 16gig of 1866 Vengeance (2x8). Going to wait till the new Samsung Evo's are available.

Then I got to try and WC the lot either in my case or order a new case. Like the look of the 900D. Possible upgrade to Win 8.1 when its released

Some of the games are not available

Games is as per website description, Dirt, Shogun2, Sleeping dogs and Simcity have run out.

So now its just Farcry3 Blood Dragon, Farcry3, Tomb Raider, Bioshock and Crysis 3, whilst stock last.

Thanks for the replies everyone. We do need the Coolermaster style of case as the cube will not fit into our computer work station.
We do not need the monitor as we already have 2 x HP 23" screens.
So please addd a few more high end components if you have compromised at all. What about 16G of ram will it be much of an improvement on 8g?

Yeah nice! RAM looks swish but is pricey really....don't forget we can lose the P&P ;)

Op has a good budget and why not :D

I always leave the postage costs, just a force of habit.

That Corsair RAM looks amazing on the UP4 mobo. Think I'll stick with the cheaper Patriot with the extra guaranteed speed.

The £20ish saving on the P&P would pay for Corsair SP120 QE fans to upgrade the H100i CLC. Gotta love our loyal membership perks :)

I would get the Corsair 650d case as I put that same 4770k/h100i bundle in mine and its sweet. Also swapped the standard fans for the sp quiet ones.

OK,
THanks again for all of the really helpful replies that have raised a few questions. Please in mind that my last PC build was approx 10 years ago!

1. Are 2 medium priced graphics cards running in crossfire better than using just one better card?

2. I always used ATI (AMD) graphics cards, why have most people suggested nVidia? In the past ATI cards were good for using 2 screens as an extended desktop and I could never manage to set up 2 screens using an nVidia card.

3. Most of your options are including the Samsung SSD and only one other HDD. At the momemt on my "antique" system I am using 2 identical drives running in Raid 0. Does nobody bother with this any longer?
Are you loading windows onto the SSD and everything else on the conventional single HDD?

4. On a 4 RAM slot Motherboard where we want 16Gb of RAM is it better to have 4 x 4Gb or 2 x 8Gb sticks?
Keep your thoughts coming,

PeterT

1) Depends on the card's used, to lower end cards can be cheaper and offer better performance than one higher end gpu but, the odd game can have issues when running dual cards.

I run dual 5850 gpus in crossfire and never had any issues.

2) The 770 offers good performance for the price and can run multiple monitors.

3) I use the SSD for Windows and the mechanical drive all other bits, I would never go back to a mechanical drive for the operating system, I also used to run RAID 0 for my operating system.
